I've had my Stingray for about a month now, I love the growl from this bass. I have had them all from Warwick and beyond, and have always fought for controlable growl, finally with my Stingray 4, I have control over the growl, it's there when I want it.

My SR5HH always growls when turned up on a 1200 watt amp though.

Most often, I want tons of growl, but there are times when people I am recording for don't. So I like having the option to control some of the growl. When I am with my regular band, it's full on and roaring away! BALLS OUT! I record with some stringed orchestras that want an electric bass in the mix, but not anything overly aggressive. The Stingray can be very versatile in respect to tone.

Agree. It's very different when recording!
I find it a bit harder to let it growl though when going thru say an Avalon pre and then in the board oppose to just play loud thru an amp.
Sounds a lot cleaner when recording direct. But most of the time we use a mix of both.

so, growl-masters, what are your favorite settings and technique for "growl" and "non-growl" tones?
On my SR5 H,
Growl = Bass and mids boosted slightly treble cut, play over the pickup, any switch setting.
Non-growl = Parallel or series on switch, mids cut slightly, bass boosted slightly, treble cut, play between the pickup and the end of the neck.,

I can usually vary the growl with picking hand technique, or by rolling off on my volume at the bass just a touch. I run my rig very hot, just below preamp overdrive, so I can control things right at the bass by picking lighter or harder depending on what I need. For recording, I use my Radial ToneBone to clean things up, it has tons of headroom and is very hard to overdrive.
