So i finally did something i never thought I'd do. I modded one of my MMs.

So, here's the deal: I love my Axis Sport but the only thing i wasn't thrilled about was the tone of the neck single coil. I had some credit to MF left over from xmas so I thought I'd buy a Duncan Lil 59er and do a little experiment.

The pup arrived late last week and I tasked my pops for a little rewriting session. So, here's my lil Sport with a lil 59er :)

I'm really stoked. I'm loving it even more now. I've always been a big fan of a bucker in the neck. it can totally cop the slash sort of smoothness. its pretty badass :)

We wired it up so that position 3 is both the neck and bridge buckers. id never played a guitar with that sort of switching. its pretty cool. its got the smoothness of the neck pickup but with some added edge. sounds great clean and overdriven.

The lil 59er splits and plays nice with the middle pickup too.

im pretty stoked. i really needed something to hold back my MM GAS while my bank account heals up

Nice one Phatty. Sometimes you have to Mod to get the sound and tone YOU want. Nothing wrong with that.

I'll bet that thing sounds great. Have you ever thought about putting a snazzier pickguard on it? It could look amazing with a little bling.

honestly... had the guitar still been in production i would not have modded it.

another huge reason to mod it was that there was 1 attribute (the neck having single coil) holding it back from being my fav guitar. this was a simple thing to homebrew and is 100% reversable so why not.

its totally gonna hold me over till i the tax guy brings me some releif

ultimately, it comes down to personal taste in sound. I don't need to mod my Luke, but I've had Sch*cters that I immediately changed pickups because, well, they weren't that good.

ditto

the Luke is perfect as is. i actually love the neck single coil in that guitar. sounds warmer than my LP who's now sporting its 4th set of pickups.

I go back and forth on which neck i like better... Luke or Axis. they differ quite a bit and are both super comfy for me. i really believe the MM necks make a huge difference. even if my LP sounded great (which, to me, it doesn't) i wouldn't wanna play it due to the chubby/clubby neck. there's something to be said about the guitar being inviting to play... esp. as far as comfort goes. it can have whatever electronics it wants but if my hands hate the neck then it just doesnt matter.

Balls are just better :) (thanks Pops)

Arin,

The Sports are great! I dig mine for sure.

Sidenote, the second Triple XXX movie was on FX last night around midnight so I decided to watch the first one. Anyways, the band playing in the opening scene (Rammstein) has an Axis Sport HH with a pickguard in what appears to be Pearl Platinum. You can see it at 1:46 and 2:46. Seeing Arin's photos put that pickguard into my short term memory so for the 1-1/2 seconds the guitar is visible onstage in the movie, it clicked!

(for some reason I can't get Nero to do a screen capture)
