Petrucci is a slim asymmetric ( carve and the Luke is a V carve, medium in thickness. I found the Luke II, I had to be a hard V carve but I've heard others comment that theirs was a soft V carve. Also the Petrucci is 1 11/16ths nut width where I believe the Luke II is 1.65.

Luke Neck vs. Petrucci Neck

I found the Petrucci neck to be very thin and 1 11/16th at the nut a shredders neck...the Luke is definitely a "V" with medium thickness more all around for long hours of playing...Both are very nice...nobody makes a better neck than MusicMan.

The Luke neck is very small and round, the Petrucci neck is wider and thinner. The Luke has 22 frets and the Petrucci has 24. Both necks are awsome, but very different. Obviously you know what a Pet neck is like, so you would really have to try a Luke neck to see what it is like. I like both necks equally but in different ways.

sorry for highjacking the thread but my questions seems relevent.

I have been trying to find out how thick the JP6 neck is at the 1st fret. I have done some poking around here and the info seems to suggest 19mm, is this correct ?

Thanks

Is the neck "fast"? I never really liked necks with much contour...i think thats why i liked the JP neck. Any neck comparsons? What neck is it similar too?

jp neck is alot like the wizard I from ibanez except i think its a compound radius. if feels compact and easy to chord but flattens out making faster licks almost subliminal with minimal effort. i dont like the luke at all because its a little too compact for me and i dont like that v stuff at all. the jp is the best neck ive ever felt

I don't think the Petrucci neck is compound radius. I believe it's a uniform 15" radius.

+1 on the JP neck. It's phenomenal. The Wizard necks are even thinner though! I played a Luke and was impressed with the neck. It's definitely a different feel, but still comfortable... Give it a try if you get a chance...

All I can add from myself is that my first thought about JP and Luke, when I first played them, was like..."hm..Luke has that, odd for me, V shape, but it's so easy to play! Phenomenal!" but after all I have to tell that JP is (for me) a way better choice! My hand likes that kind of neck. Plus JP is a dream guitar for me no matter of what :D

Thats how i feel! But, i kindov wanted the grit you can get from an EMG equipped guitar...and it seems stupid to buy another petrucci BFR and put some EMGs in it which wont work with half of the electronics...

i normally hate V-shaped necks. The Dean V-neck is just crap...cant stand it, so if its anything like that, or like the fender V-necks i guess i wont like it :(

I used to had a guitar with EMGs on board, but now I really appreciate and respect passive pickups, like those in JP. I actually wouldn't recommend to change pickups on JP: first. there is no need to do that, second. EMGs require additional screw holes in your JP body...

Maybe hit a music store and check Luke once again. For my hands JP is the only, but maybe you've just had bad experience with that Dean guitar...I bet it wasn't such piece of guitar as every EBMM is :)

If you were to get another BFR Petrucci, you could always try out a set of DiMarzio De-Activator pickups. They're DiMarzio's answer to active pickups, but their passive. They're as hot as actives but without the usual volume drop that you get with actives (drop in volume going from neck pickup to bridge pickup).

I can remember someone on either this forum or the Petrucci forum doing a measurement at the first fret coming in at around 17.5mm.

I also agee with the previous posters with the comparison in thickness to the Ibanez Wizard I neck. In fact I played an Ibanez RG1570 that had a neck similar in thickness as well. Main difference aside from the finish, is the Petrucci neck has a rounder asymmetrical carve and the Ibanez is has more of a flat back.

That's a really good comparison of the two. Very true.

The JP neck is perfection IMO... It just looks 'right' when I look at it - scale, shape, finish, and width are all perfect.
