Have you guys heard of this crazy thing. Apparently, if you max the bass and mid and kill the treble there is some sound "shift" that occurs on some high gain amps. Brown sound kind of thing.

Anyone heard of this or is it an internet rumor?

Probably an internet rumor. You know what amps they might be talking about?

Kind of sounds like a rumor or joke even. I know extreme settings can create some very unique tones though! It's best to EQ an amp with your ears not your eyes...

Most amps IMO would sound crappy with those extreme settings.

I've heard of crazier things before. I'd love to know what amps people have tried this on and hear some recordings...

i always set everything in the middle 5 on a scale of 10 and adjust from there.

i always gravitate to less bass, more mids and adjust highs acocording to the room sound.

I can hit the brown note with my guitar and amp. You don't want me to, though.

I wouldn't be surprised if that actually worked on an old Marshall, but on my amp it would just sound like a Sunn 0))) record. :)

I use this setting quite a bit actually. Mostly with my JCM 900. Because of the inherent bright characteristics of the amp I don't really need much treble, if any, depending upon what guitar I'm playing. Just as MusicManJP6 said, it's better to EQ with your ears than your eyes :)

+1

I've definitely toyed with marshalls at similar settings.

My band mates got me a wireless for my birthday. It is a really useful tool for larger gigs, but man does it suck tone HARD. I'm starting the long slow process of re-EQing my amp and effects again.

there was a 'magic 6' amp setting from the late 70s where you would set the volume to 6, treble to 6, mid to 3 and bass to 2 (6, 6, 3x2=6) and basically ignore any other settings.

Dr, what wireless unit did they get you?

Shure PG14 Wireless Guitar System.

I've only just got it... so i won't write it of completely just yet..
But so far it's seemed to suck my tone and sustain substantially :(

I almost feel like i need to run a small clean boost or something following the unit to regenerate/re-establish the full volume/dynamics of my signal to where it was originally.

Has anyone had a similar experience or able to offer some advice?

Ive tried a Shure wireless, biggest tone sucking piece of crap ever.

+1 Most wireless systems I've tried introduce an inordinate amount of tone suckage.

I used to have the Sennheiser G2 wireless system which was pretty good. I'm back to using cables now.

Awesome. Just awesome.
I recieved what is a very very thoughtful gift, but just happens to be a soul destroying, tone sucking piece of crap.

Has anyone found/used/borrowed/purchased a wireless unit and not considered it horribly destroy the essence of their sound, unfocus their Qi and disturb their feng-shui? Any recommendations?

If so, i may try sell or trade this unit and upgrade.

The Sennheiser EW172 set is the best I've heard. They also have the EW372 set. Both are pretty expensive, especially the 372. I would still be using mine if it weren't for the piezo in all of my JP guitars.
