Not a whole lotta help in this thread. Just a handfull of you giving me crap for being "gullable".

I have done additional research and apparently certain Bogners MAY have been built with a setting that he "hid" in the EQ.

Lots of amps do things different, depends on the builder.

One of the things I do now when I listen to an amp is roll off all the EQ and see what the amp sounds like on its own ... eg what frequencies it passes with everything else off. Gives you the flavour of the amp ... what frequencies you can't get rid of. (I thank Guy Hedrick for this tidbit.)

One of my Guytrons is dead quiet like this- cranked, with the gain full, you get nothing out of the amp with the controls down. Makes it very intuitive to dial exactly what you want from it.

I hope you're not including me on that. I honestly wanted to know what amps you heard this about. If it really is Bogner you've heard this about, then I'll go home tonight and try it on my Uberschall and see what happens. Also, I happen to be making a trip to my nearest Bogner/ENGL/Mesa/Rivera/Dr. Z/Orange dealer on Saturday to check out a few amps and I can try this on everything they have in the shop if you want.

Plus, now that you mention it, I remember Reinhold himself saying something about this in a video somewhere. I think maybe it was on one of the new models he showcased at NAMM this year...

Of course I am not including you. I was referring to the pointless comments.

I would never ask you to try a bunch of amps to check it out. But feel free to try it on your Uberschall. Let us know what you come up with.

It apparently applies to at least the Bogner Shiva, and though I have not called them they will confirm this if you ask them according to several members on another board. I have never tried it on my Ecstasy but probably will give it a shot at some point.

I was going to the shop to check out amps anyway. It would be my pleasure to play as much as I can on as many amps as I can with as many settings as I can. :D It's all part of being a "tone hunter"

I've never tried a Bogner, but I recently assembled an Allen Amps Sweet Spot kit.

David Allen engineered the tone stack to produce a RAW (his term) control. The midrange control behaves normally from 0 to 3 and then proceeds to take the tone stack out of the circuit - giving more gain and an overall flatter response.

This is accomplished by using a 1 MegOhm pot for the mid that essentially "floats" the tone stack off ground and out of the circuit.

I don't know if this should be described as "brown", but it is distinctive. I really have no idea of what "brown tone" would be except for the "brown note" episode on South Park a few years back. I wouldn't want that coming out of my amp.

There are probably other versions of tone stack circuit that can accomplish similar results. They may be "undocumented features," to use Microsoft-speak, in other amplifier makes.

Good luck.

One of my Guytrons is dead quiet like this- cranked, with the gain full, you get nothing out of the amp with the controls down. Makes it very intuitive to dial exactly what you want from it.

This depends if the EQ is active or passive...

I never realized an amp was such a complicated creature
