I've played both of them at GC but its hard to tell the true sound with GC's terrible setups and old batteries etc... Obviously one has a low B one does not, but is the 5'er alot more versatile sound wise? Can you get the Ray tone on the 5? I tried to dial it in using the selector switch toward the bridge at GC but couldn't get as aggresive a tone as with the 4 I tried.

I'm ordering one or the other today (in white probably with a maple board on the 5 or a rosewood board on the 4) can someone offer some insight?

the main difference si the pickup. sr5 uses ceramic magnets while sr4 uses alnico. my suggestion is for you to wait for the 20th anniversary sr5. it has the alnico magnet. and the sound of the sr4 and might be much better
