I posted one of those polls (actually two of them) on talkbass to find out what strings people used on their basses in relation to fingerboard material.
It made for interesting reading, even if it was somewhat unscientific.

It kind of supports my supposition that most bassists match strings to a specific bass, using stainless steel to brighten up a "warm" sounding bass or nickel to warm up a bright sounding bass.
