Does anyone know the specific differences between the two or the different advantages of each...

What do you prefer?

Well, imho, Maple boards are harder, slicker, "faster" than Rosewood, with a snappier tone that's got more presence and a sharper attack... Rosewood is warmer, more round and airy than Maple, with a sweetness and depth, and a softer feel under your fingers... Of course, the differences are really pretty subtle in the tone department, but I think I can tell a Maple board when I feel one under my hand... As far as preference is concerned, I prefer either to Ebony ;)

Ebony creates a brittle tone....not a fan of it. In fact interesting tidbit that Jimi D is probably aware of, the new run of Jem 7VWH's the replaced the ebony board with rosewood.

There may be slight differences in tone between the two, but I think alot of people make the decision based on just cosmetics.
Some colors look good with maple. Most colors look good with Rwood.

Actually, I didn't know that - cool! I always thought that the ebony board with the EVOs was WA-A-AY too shrill!!

I'd read that over on Jemstie a few weeks ago, some dude was p & m'ing about it because it wasn't like Steve's. Now if Steve is adding new Jems to his on road arsenal, they have the Edge Pro on them with the rosewood boards....who cares tho'? I like rosewood way better myself. In fact one day when I have some disposible cash I might have to get the Jem 7dbk. I love that guitar for a Floyd piece.

My preference depends on a lot of things. Like the body wood, the bridge pickups, whatever. For example, I never liked strats or teles with anything but maple boards. For neckthroughs and "Metal" guitars I love ebony. I think the brighter tone of the ebony helps out a lot of neck through stuff. If I'm going for all around tone, I definitely go for rosewood. It's pretty in between.

Cosmetically, I love birdseye maple!
