I picked up the james labrie ( dream theater) solo album last week and he's got this relativly unknown italian guitarist by the name of marco sfogli, who plays a Ebmm john petrucci model as well as a couple more ebmm's. Anyway his playing is quite good, i'd recommend checking him out.

Thanks man, I'm listening to some audio clips...ah that's smooth! Fellow wap to boot :D

Ah the guy rocks! I emailed him, I want to interview him for another site www.sevenstring.org since he plays an EBMM JP 7 (as well as an Ibanez). I've just finished an interview with Rob Johnson, and I'm starting another with Nocturnal Rites guitarist Nils Erik Norberg!

"Unfortunately" most of the cool leads and licks on that album is played by the keyboard player.

The first solo part of "slightly out of reach" is just sooo well written and I thought it was Marco who was playing but alas...

Marco's a good player. Plus he's Italian so that's cool. In some of the videos though, LaBrie really seems to lay the praise on thick when the guy does a solo.

Yeah and it seams to me like LaBrie is drunk or something. ;)
Rubbing his face with one hand and holds a cup of coffee in the other.

"Woah man, you're like... That's like.... really..."

He's a good technician but at times the tones on the LaBrie are a little lacking or less than to be desired imho...I need to hear more of this cat...

I just got this CD. I like it but you guys are right, you need to look at the liner notes to see who is soloing. The keyboard player kicks butt on guitar too.

I watched the videos and wonder if LaBrie is excited or blown away because the solos were first takes? We'll never know. Marco's solo lines are very vocal and well composed, nice tone, and great technique.

The liner notes say that Petrucci made sure some extra JPs were available in the studio for him to use. That was cool. It appears that he only owns one, unless he received a present. I'm happy for him. Good work.

I have seen him...

a few months ago in Concert with James L.
In Rome ( near my house ;P )

He is a great player and a funny person ( you can image the atmosphere in Rome for an italian guitar player ),
but he have a little problem...is too similar to petrucci style ...
each great guitar player have own style (petrucci, malmsteen, paul gilbert, satriani, vai, romeo, friedman, etc etc...)
instead marco seems too "inspired" by Petrucci , at least for me...

I hope that he can take a unique style for the future. :)

Bye

I was just checking out his website and saw that he now plays a new set of guitars. I think it's clear to see a definate Music Man influence on the construction. Check them out anyway, I don't like what they look like very much, never played one though; I'm just not into those Renault Va Va Voom like guitar backsides. It's nice to see he's still suppoting the ol' Music Man schtuff.

Thanks for the tip on the Marco Sfogli site. Bryan Beller, whom I met at a clinic that Mike Keneally and he were doing, was saying some really nice things about him. I'd been meaning to check out that James LaBrie album after hearing what Bryan Beller had to say.
