Like I've mentioned in previous threads, the EQ on my 2006 Stingray 5H is a good, musical sounding preamp. One thing which is no biggie but I'm curious with others who own a Stingray 5H. The Mid control is rather subtle. When I turn from Flat to about 75%, there is not much difference between 75% setting and up all the way to 100%. A slight differnce at most. Don't get me wrong, I don't need more mids, I'm curious if other owners notice this?

It kind of reminds me of my Demeter HBP-1 preamp. Demeters have a passive eq and the adjustments are real subtle. Not including the active Parametric EQ section.

One thing about my 2006 Stingray 5 compared to my 1998 Sterling is: The bass a rather powerful on the Sterling. One click past the de-tent and it's bass frequency form hell. But my 2006 Stingray 5, I can turn the bass to 50% and it's still musical sounding.

Sterling Ball said that the Stingray went through 105 changes sinse they bought the company. Could the preamp frequencies be different from the 1998 Sterling to the 2006 Stingray 5?

I have a 2000 'Ray 5'er, and the treble knob is good response across the spectrum, from nothing to very hi-fi at full on, the mids are less so, with less of a difference between full-off and full-on, but still a noticeable difference, and the bass is pretty much the same way you describe yours, just slightly past the detent it pumps into bottom-end for days.
I've had the bass for about a year now, and am used to the eq, and use it endlessly at each gig, dialing-in various different tones for different songs....

I think how much you notice the mids is dependent on how the treb and bass are eq'ed. And the amp. If the amp is set up all scooped, twiddling the mid knob isn't going to do much. Same on the bass, if you have the treb pegged and the bass cranked, you aren't going to see much difference .... try everything flat and work from there, including the amp.

For some reason the stingray5 preamp doesnt act exactly like the sterling preamp. I prefer the sterlings, hands down. It has such a hot output, and the EQ is very responsive. A little turn past the center on any of the controls makes a huge difference; I never max anythnig out. On the sr5 (hh) its quite easy to max out something and have it still be a less radical tone.

I've read in a recent Bass Player Mag. reviewing the Stingray 5 HH. They say that the Stingray 5s use ceramic pickups and the Sterlings and Stingray 4s use Alnico. I've always heard that ceramic is more hotter than Alnico. The Stingray 5H and the Stingray 5HH have different shaped pickups. The Stingray 5HH are tapered near the screws where as the Stingray 5 is rounded at the edges like a normal soapbar PU. And the Stingray 4 and Sterlings have screw tabs.

I believe thats slightly incorrect, the sterlings and the stingray 5s use ceramic, just the stingrays use alnico. The shapes of the pickups on all of the HH and HS models are different, but taht has nothing to do with the sound.
