ok, now that I got your attention... :D

I played a (cough) carvin holdsworth "fatboy" today and have to admit that I didn't hate it. (I had played one a couple of years ago, but was too wraped up in brand loyality to really judge it properly) so as I'm playing it, I think to myself, "hey... Holdsworth lives in cali... woulden't it by nice if this was a Music Man? I like my Axis SS much more than this guitar but often wish it was hollow. mayhaps he could be lured away from Carvin (cough)... imagine a hollow Axis... fun! then where could this thought process go...? ah! a john mclaughlin Music Man! a capitol idea! it could come with a built in midi pickup and we can all play through laptops - but no I'll just settle for a hollow axis."

oh well. wishful thinking. anybody else ever thought this? about a full on hollowbodied axis, I mean. not all the psychotic rambling about allan holdsworth.

As I recall, some people at the Wolfg@ng Custom Shop built some hollow-body Wolfgangs as prototypes-there's a neat story about them out on the Web somewhere, but I can't remember the site.

From the linked site:

"In the true spirit of innovation and entrepreneurship that Peavey is known for they decided to build one."

Entrepreneurship: Hartley PV liked electronics and music. He started the company from scratch and made it what it is today. Fairly entrepreneurial IMO.

Innovation: One major moment of innovation was the use of computerized machines to cut guitar parts. PV was the first to do this in the late 70's with the T-60. Other companies would soon follow but PV was the first. That's innovative.

It's o.k. that PV isn't your cup of tea. Not a big deal in the least. But implying ( ) that there is no entrepreneurship or innovation there is something that just isn't an accurate assertion.

Holdsworths are pretty cool lookng. Not sure I like the 20" radius though. Also not sure about the pickups.

The hollow Wolves look interesting. But I think the story was right when it wondered where the market for these would be.

What kind of music would you play with a hollow Axis? Jazz? Would you change the pickups out for something else? I think Jazz may be one of the best uses for the stock neck pickup. I like it a lot. The pickups in my EVH are a pleasure every time I play that guitar. Regardless of the style of music.

.

Actually, I used the rolleyes because I thought the quote was a very over-the-top way to describe the decision to build some prototypes.

I'd definently swap out the pickups on the (cough) carvin - not sure for what though. and for me; lately I've been finding these moments where I really wanted my axis to sound EXACTLY the same, just "bigger." I've swapped out amps, played with different external eq's, and nothing really hits the sound I'm hearing in my head. what actually creates this situation has nothing to do with the guitar itself, it's the fact that I use (ready for a laugh) a DOD yjm-30whatever preamp overdrive, an analogman ts-9, and a keeley 3way modded proco Rat to cascade into each other to create my distorted sound. I think there are just specific frequencies I find on my axis' that I'll basically "feel" resonating while I'm playing, and wish I could augment them in some way without drastically modifying my sound - and I've tried.

and I have to completly chime in with you on the usefullness of the EVH and subsiquently the axis. there just isn't another guitar on the market (that I've found) that I know I can use for anything. I'm extremly greatful on a daily basis that MM makes ths guitar because it's the first and only one I've played in a decade that A.) did exactly what I wanted it to do and B.) gives me nearly no trouble ever, even when traveling with it. huzzah!

Fair enough.

I guess I get use to a certain amount of bravado from any company when they talk about their gear. That aside, you're right. Even if it wasn't necessarily exadurating IMO, it was more than what was necessary to talk about the prototypes.

Now in the way I am accustomed to to doing. I am signing off my message with brevity and concise word usements. No one will be surprised with the ease at which I conclude due to the tell tale lack of words or verbage of any kind... over the top like that?

cir·cum·lo·cu·tion ( P ) Pronunciation Key (sûrkm-l-kyshn)
n.
1. The use of unnecessarily wordy and indirect language.
2. Evasion in speech or writing.
3. A roundabout expression.

This word by itself is oxymoronic.

Thank you SteveB for enhancing my vernacular.

No problem, NorM! I've always wanted to find a suitable conversation to make use of that word.

(It's derived from pure Latin, by the way.. literally to "speak around" a subject)

I do recall Frank Zappa using a form of the word at one point, let me Google for the exact quote...

Thus spake FZ:
This song suggests to the suggestible listener that the
ordinary procedure ah,
That I am circumlocuting at this present time in order to get
this text on television,
Is that ah, if you wanna do something other than what you
thought you were gonna do when you first took your clothes off
and you just happened to have some DEVICES around...
Then it's, it's not only okay to get into the
PARAPHERNALIA of it all but...Hey!
What did he say? Ready?
