Hello,

Can someone tell me if MM Super Sports have a shallow humbucker routing? I just put Evolution Humbuckers on my SS and noticed they stick out ALOT. I have the saddles raised to where they won't raise no more it looks kind of ridiculous but this is the only way to keep the strings from touching the top of the pickups. Does anyone else have this problem or is this something with just DiMarzio Evolutions? Has anyone else replaced humbuckers with Seymours or DiMarzios and they fit fine? Thanks in advance.

Mine don't have that problem and I chose Lawrence p'ups for replacement. They're ceramic, meaning that the magnets are on the bottom, making the p'up thicker than stock.

Really? If possible can you tell me or can you find out if the pickups you have are taller than the Evolutions? I'd really appreciate it. The Evolutions are about 1 3/4" tall and the stock pickups that came with my SS are about 1". Can someone verify this and tell me if I have a defect with my SS? I've compared the Evolutions to all my pickups JBs, 59s and the Evolution is a good 3/4 and even a whole inch taller than some. I have Evolutions on 2 Fender Strats and also on a Jackson Soloist but they fit perfectly. I need to know what's up with that because if it is a shallow routing then I'll just get 59s.

Thanks for your help.

I've had people tell me that'Rio Grande'p'ups have this problem, very tall and thin.Which gives a very tight, focused sound. Not familiar with evolutions but they must be shooting for the same thing.I would suggest finding some measuring calipers.Measure p'up pocket depth, trem cavity depth, and overall body thickness.Subtract the first two from last measurement and that's what meat ya got left.I would route out no more than a 1/4 of that figure.Or you could consider mounting p'up directly to body[down inside the route]that's what Eddie VH duz, althou it is a myth that that would increase sustain.Hope this helps.

Oh yeah,BTW,my p'ups are NOT that thick, and do yer p'up 'ears' hang past bottom plate of p'up?You could just route that part only.On your particular model, the p'ups are mounted directly to the wood, yes?I've seen some early versions with pickguard]

Oh man, I don't have the balls to rout the guitar or do anything to it like that. I'd hate to mess it up even though I've used routers before. I measured the Evolutions and they are very tall compared to even the older Evolutions. I have 2 sets of Evolutions, 2 on a Jackson and 2 on my MM but these newer ones on the MM are TALL. I'll take it to a luthier and see what can be done. Thanks man.

The pickup cavities in your SS are cut to fit the stock pickups. Because replacement pickups can vary in size (as you have already seen), you will need to modify the guitar to make them fit.

i'll ad in after Greg here, if you modify the axis it will prolly void your warranty as well. so i would consider that as well.

oh yeah, a cool experiance i had the otehr day. i like the axis stock pickups alot, they have great output. i was jamming with a buddy, he had his amp off and was strumming some chords a foot or two away. i had my volume all the way up with the strings muted and i was picking up his playing thru my pickups out my amp. it was faint but it was his playing indeed. no lie. we didn't have any other gear on either. i thought that was cool indeed.

Yes, I noticed. No way I'm modifying my SS I'll just keep it like it is. It's not bad it just sticks out more.

Thanks

I picked up a baseball game thru one of my guitars one day..tv was on in the other room and I heard.."back, back, back...goooone..Giambi has gone yard". It was the weirdest thing.

Perhaps a better solution to fitting this ipckup to your guitar woudl be to replace the base plate of the pickup. Routing the guitar would indeed void your warrantee. If you can see if you can remove the old plate off your pickup and put a different one on. If this involves intensive work with a hammer and crowbar i wouldnt pull it off.

Instead you could grid down the wings(things the screw screw into on your base plate) and then glue a different plate on teh bottom. Try looking at www.sustainiac.com, they glue mini humbuckers together on a humbucker sized plate. That might be what you need and im sure you could buy one from them.
