Hi all,

I stupidly left my musicman sterling in a room that constantly changed temperature. When i finally took it out of there and checked it, there was rust on the jack input and under the pick up. I can't get any sound from the guitar. Is it completely destroyed or is there anything you'd suggest i do??

Many thanks!

Russ

Depending on how good you are with electronics you can start by cleaning the rust from the contact areas. If that doesn't get you a signal you can use a multitester to check the wiring for bad connections.
Since you've found rust in the system you're going to want to get it all cleaned-up for future preservation.

Yeah, definitely sounds like it may need factory help. Have you looked under the hood to see how badly the electronics have been messed up? is the battery still good?

you'll definitely want some electrical contact cleaner, as well as some tune control cleaner and lubricant. You will want to probably ditch the battery, and clean the hell out of everything. You may have to desolder the output jack to get at it properly to clean it.

......... and clean the hell out of everything. You may have
to desolder the output jack to get at it properly to clean it.

Why clean it ? Once you've got the soldering iron hot, you
owe yourselves a NEW jack .... about $4 for Switchcraft if
you want the best [junk is barely cheaper, no go there].

As a wise man said, We must strive while the iron is HOT !
