Long day courtesy of EBMM, Dubaldo Music, Deep Purple, and of course Steve. An uneventful weekend came to a close with an email from Pete asking if I'd be willing to step up and possibly transport STEVE MORSE from his hotel in Boston to the clinic in CT.
Well at first I thought Pete was just sending an email teasing me to buy something but it turned out to be true. I had to swing up to Boston and get The Man. How could I refuse and let cool opportunity to bore Steve with details about my life and asking him questions like how cool it was to come up with the riff to Smoke on the Water back in the day.
So I got the details and headed out for an 11:30 am pickup. I was 10 minutes early upon arrival. I went into the lobby and scoped out who was around and thought I spotted Steve sitting in the lobby with his back to me. It turned out to be a woman knitting
. I had the desk call up to his room and Steve came strolling into the lobby exactly at 11:30. I said hi and kind of startled him - I think he thought I was a fan - but I told him your chariot awaits. His first question was "Do you have A/C?", LOL. With number 1 safely in the back seat we were off. I wasn't sure how to handle the conversation at that point but I had all those burning questions about Smoke on the Water and Hush that I just had to get answered. I figured I save em for later so I just asked to play number one while I merged onto the mass pike. But seriously, Steve was very cool and we talked about everything from kids, his project with Protnoy, Morse, and LaRue, dream theater fall out, touring, the record biz, songwriting (this is where I asked about Smoke), practicing, airport security, speeding, jobs and interviewing. And not once did he roll his eyes or yawn from boredom. Super guy which we already knew. I brought him to his hotel in Hartford so he could check in. Sadly he did not leave number 1 in the car - I figured I had a chance to play it at that point.
Then we were off to Cheney Hall where not 30 seconds in the door, he plugs in and starts ripping. The clinic itself was awesome despite Steve claiming he barely played well for 30 seconds straight. Yeah right! He was very humorous answering questions and would have spent all day there with everyone if he could have. Some lucky chap got a lesson with Steve while steve went on to floor us with some classical guitar playing.
Later on I was given the opportunity to go to the show (which Steve offered in the ride). The band was tight and loud. Only downside is I had to drive Nick up to the show (sensing a pattern). VIP backstage after the show, a 'You made it' from Steve and then well wish for my interview that I had this morning. Anyway, thanks again to everyone involved and to Mama Dubaldo for the lasagna.
