Actually, it's a damn good interview.
 
I wonder what Pena's and McLaughlin's problem was with having Steve play with them, I don't know how you can hear Steve play and not be knocked out by it, especially since they were considering Metheny originally.

Maybe it was just that Dimeola had a bigger reputation at the time, or maybe Steve was too classically influenced, like my classical teacher used to say about flamenco "how can you listen to that sh*t?"
 
I saw that tour when I was in college at San Diego State ('84). They played an open air theater there.

I had discovered Steve 2 years earlier (owned all the dregs stuff) and was a fan of Al's for going on 7 years at that point. His ELEGANT GYPSY album was my favorite for a long time.

The thing I remember most was wishing steve had longer to play and being floored by his ability to suck you into his music live whether he was alone or had a bunch of other players on stage with him.
