Morse Y2D or Luke BFR?

I need your advice.

I currently play in a covers band playing songs ranging from Beatles to recent pop. I'm using a Luke and love it but also want to try something else.

Drove 70 miles yesterday to try out an Axis SS, Silo (HB SS) and Morse. All sounded good as you'd expect but having been a Luke player for the last year I'm not sure which of these will cover a broad range as well as the Luke.

Originally I travelled expecting to buy the Asis SS but struggled with it. Probably because it doesn't have a top contour like the Luke. I could probably live with it though. Hadn't tried Morse until yesterday and was pleasantly surprised. Even lack of contour didn't bother me the same.

But...having been a single coil guy for so long I'm not sure whether the Morse has the versatility that the Luke provides.

So, I really need some advice/feedback from you. Should I consider holding out for a Luke BFR or get the Morse because it will be a great alternative (and back up) for my current Luke.

Hey Paul-

Tough question. The BFR Luke is awesome, for sure. But that would give you two of roughly the same guitar (nothing wrong with that, though).

The Morse/Y2D is a great guitar, though tonally it's a departure from the Luke. The bridge bucker cleans up very well, and you can still get some good single coil sounds from the bridge single. The standard Morse is probably a tad more versatile, you can get some quack sounds with the two singles.

Why just narrow it down to those two? I'm thinking if you want more single coil sounds, you might consider the Silhouette Special or the Albert Lee (there's a BFR version with the tone block, too).

I prefer the original morse then the y2d, being an owner of both i still prefer the original morse.

Thanks to all of you for your feedback.

It's never an easy one as everyone has an opinion, generally different from each other.

The difficulty here in UK is getting to test guitars as there are so few stockists, especially in the north.

Spoke to the shop owner today. He can get both BFR's within days so it looks like I'm going to go down this route rather than something so different it doesn't fit the sounds I need.

I'll post again when I finally agree on my next purchase and of course get the pictures to you.

I 'm in the Beej camp if you're looking for a single coil ALTERNATIVE, maybe the AL..but being a Luke player exclusively myself, I always have to struggle a bit more on a guitar if its not the Luke. So id rather have a backup similar to my main one.

I'd seriously consider the piezo option luke (not avail on BFR) if you're doing some acoustic covers in your band as well.

Sounds Great in Cheadle have got a BFR Luke and a Y2D in stock at the moment. They're near to Manchester.

I totally understand what you mean about the lack of a top contour on the Axis ASS. That has been my one and only complaint with my ASS. I find it hard to play for long periods of time due to this. I thought I could get over it, but I I've come to the conclusion that the Axis SS isn't the right guitar for me now. That's such a bummer to say because I LOVE the sound, LOVE the neck, and I think it's got a stunning shape.
