moster cables or ray problems?

Now Ive heard alot of critizism about monster cables on the board before, and I think i might be experiencing some problems with mine. when I plug in to my amp I get this loud booming noise through my amp. I noticed that it happens when the cable is moved around or touched near the input jack on my ray. so now Im not sure if its the cable or if its my input jack. Does anyone know which it is? if its the cable (which im hoping it is) can anyone recommend a good cable thatll last long, i heard good things about planet waves cables, but any advice will be appreciated, thanks.

For me:

5 years of Monster Cables = about 8 free replacements due to shorts

2 1/2 years of Planet Waves Cables = Zero replacements, great sound

Catch the Waves dude! :D
 
well that does it for me, im gonna pick up some monster cables on my next adventure to guitar center, but any ideas on if it is acctually the cables, or could it be my baby stingray? has anything like this happened to any one else here?

I used to use a monster bass cable and I had the same type of thing happen to me. It sounds like its probably the cable not the bass. Mess with it when you get a new cable and then you'll know for sure.
 
well thats a relief, thanks guys. I figure I'll go this weekend and replace my monster cables with the planet waves cables, cause not being able to use my amp for a stupid reason like that is torture
 
Para me:

Three years of a Monster instrument cable = no problems so far!

Maybe I got one of the better ones? Or maybe it's just about to hit its autumn years? :p
 
i find cheap cables work very well. some of the more audiophile types might not like them becasue they buzz or dont sound very good, but i think why not. its cheap, you dont have to worry about it, and if it messes up its not hard to replace. actually i have a peavey cable that is working out quite well for me. i have no idea what a good hig quality cable could do for my sound but the peavey i have works just fine so why should i mess with it?
 
I use Quatum cables and have no issues other than one with the center pin getting loose in one jack and I believe that was due to it hitting a concrete floor a couple of times. Might check your Monster cable for the same. Doesn't cost much to put a new jack on the cable.

Ska I used to use cheap cables until I actually heard how much better my bass sounds with a quality cable. It makes a HUGE difference. And if you invest about $60.00-$70.00 in (2) Planet Waves cables, if one craps out you use the other and send it in for the lifetime replacement warranty. A no-brainer IMHO. :p
 
well i just got my new planet waves cable and no more problems. it was pretty expensive, $35 for a 20 footer, but the sound quality is real nice, and im diggin the gold ends. I think ill be stickin with these unless they end up crappin out on me too.
 
Monster Cables are nortious for becoming Microphonic, and it sounds like thats your problem... just pick up a brand new one from any store that carries them, you dont even need a reciet or had to have bought it from them. just bring the cable in and replace it...

the only good thing about those cables is the warenty and the 24 gold ends
 
i use the cheapest leads I can get, they break/ last just as often as the deer ones. If you stand on a good or bad quality lead they break! cheaper somes with the screw on cover can be repaired at home also!
 
If I could pipe in on this side of the fence:

I have had my gear fully rigged with Monster Cable, and have had zero issue. I've been using Monster Cable in every application that I could over the last 12 years or so. Since I play a 5150 head and slant cab, noise is not an additive that I need in my mix. :) I've noticed that since everything is MC, it has cut down drastically the amount of noise that travels through the cables in comparison to what I'd been dealing with previous. I may be in the minority here, but I swear by them.

In regards to my home recording setup, another cable that I'm a fan of are Live Wires...metal connectors, jackets that extend out from connection point to limit the cable being bent in that area, and, as is the case with MC, lifetime replacement. Good cables, IMHO.

I gave up on buying the cheap cables, and decided that if I was going to invest in 'em, was going to do it where I could replace without issue if necessary (nice that there's a GC 4 miles down the road if that's called upon).
 
Well whether you use monster cables, cheap no name cables, or planet waves, if they work for you, keep on usin em. As for me and obviously some others on the board, the monster cables didnt work out. Seems odd they work in some instances and not others, but things happen. Both of my monster cables crapped out on me within a week or 2 of one another. I still plan on getting them replaced, and Ill use them as back up, but right now I'll use my new planet waves cables, they sound nice and i find that little surge protector button or whatever its really called to be handy. :D
 
I think we all should price one of Oldbluesbassman's cables. After all a fellow bassist wouldn't build a bad one on purpose.

Me, I can't even really hear the difference between, say, ash and alder.

Now how much do them fancy cables cost?
 
I think what's happening here is that you have a good amount of folks that have been happy in the MC category trying to wave the flag that it's not a major issue that's affecting everyone, ie. the cat that was on here before that b*tched about how horrible EBMM is because his SR was having issues. One Stingray just sets the standard for what everyone should take into consideration when buying one...SR's are bad, EBMM is bad. Yawn...whatever.

Hey man, these are "Coke vs Pepsi, Mac vs Windows" arguments. Someone's stuck on their choice, chances are high that they won't change (see my sig quote for true proof!) As I say, "to each their own". If the Planet Waves is workin for ya, great. :) But I went through cables before like water, and this time around (I sold my stuff back in '97 and "took a little break", started back up in '02) I spent about $300 on cables over time...the noise went down, the tone came up, and I haven't had issue one with any of them...but it's good to have that "buy once, replace for free if necessary" golden parachute. :)

Bov, I can hear differences in noise levels, etc. but that's about where my line is drawn. I can't get as technical as EJ. :) But like I said, with a 5150, less noise is a good thing! :)

Just offering my opinion...
