Hello. i am new around here but for a good reason.

In a weeks time the most i am going to hve my first EBMM guitar and thats going to be an axis..

I am on the hunt currently but i spotted 2-3 guitars.

First i have found a great deal for a brand new Axis in the uk going for 1550 British pounds. Not used or ex demo. Brand new. The guitar strangely has a solid color. Its black with maple fretboard and neck and no matching headstock. Which year EBMM gave black as a color option for the Axis? Does it still have a maple top?

I am talking for this one ----> https://guitarvillage.co.uk/products/music-man-axis-hh-floyd-black-maple

The dealer says on the website basswood body but doesn t mention maple top....

Also my playing style is BLues rock and hard rock and some rhythm Blues occasionally. Do you think the Axis with Floyd will serve me well or is better to go the ASS way? I know how to setup a floyd so no problem with floyd frustation here.

I"m sure some experts will chime in, but I believe that black was available not too long ago, and available for quite a while.. but somebody else can confirm. Unless its some odd ball guitar, it will still have the basswood body with a maple cap regardless of the solid vs. transparent colors.

Personally I love the axis, but there is lots of love for the ASS as well.. Good luck with your choice.

Hey @Captaindog! Welcome to the forum!

Black was available basically for around 20 years (along with probably 18 other solid and translucent colors). Up until 31/Oct/2015. Then EBMM dropped the colors and just do Trans Gold, Natural, and Balboa Blue on the Axis.

Then Axis Floyd and the Axis Super Sport are both amazing guitars. Both bridges are great. The locking nut on the Floyd model will keep you in tune no matter what you do. The ASS is a LITTLE less stable in that respect, but is still really good unless you're crazy with the whammy bar.

Enjoy your Axis!

I find my Axis is pretty hard rocking and prefer my Axis Sport for more subtle control. Don't get me wrong I do love playing the Axis, it's a real awesome "balls to the wall" sound and so powerful, but having a volume and tone control on the Sport gives it more tonal expression with the volume rolled off, plus the 5 way selector of course.

That Axis looks nice and seems a good price. Nice contrast with the maple neck and black body. Reminds me of my black LP Custom, cool yet quite understated.

Sounds Great near me have a nice ASS but has a "small scratch" on it. They normally do a deal on published prices though.

I think I'd prefer the ASS for that, more options in terms of sound (though in fairness I'm a massive user of the tone control, so the Axis wouldn't be for me anyway).

Tone control? What's that?!?!? (Longtime Axis user here) honestly I've been able to play everything with the Axis as the volume knob is very responsive and backing off the volume can give the Axis some very sweet tones beyond "balls to the wall". My gold Axis is still my favorite almost 20 years later.

The few times I would need a tone control was to emulate smooth jazz guitar sounds, otherwise a tone control is not exactly a must on my shopping list.

I love the shape of the Axis but I can't be bothered with the cuffufle of having a Floyd Rose on it.
The Axis Super Sport would be my choice if I could afford one.
