Just picked up a sweet used Axis MM90.
I absolutely love the P90s, but am considering swapping one out with a P90 shaped humbucker. Looking for input from anyone who has experience (or opinions) on the matter:
  • I am considering leaving the bridge P90...would a neck bucker have enough crunch?
  • Leaning toward Dimarzio Super Distortion, but not sold on it...any other recommendations on P90/min humbucker/firebird pups that just rock

Do a search for Jamie Humprhies- he has a few videos with his Axis Super Sport, featuring an MM90 in the neck and Dimarzio DLX Plus in the bridge.

(I'm about to do the same thing to my old MM90 Sport.)

I wonder how those would sound reversed...I've only seen that done sparingly...

I haven’t tried to fit a P90 sized HB into the MM90 rout. I’ve done this swap with other P90 loaded guitars, and it fit with no additional routing. Take measurements.

If I had to make a recommendation, I’d get a set of DiMarzio DLX’s. Plenty of crunch, and I’ve heard them do everything from cleans to metal levels of distortion with ease.

Got an insane deal on the dp209 - thanks Reverb...$40 - so taking the guitar to my local tech tomorrow. And yes...I will be posting pics.

Anybody have experience splitting this thing? I am really considering putting it in the neck position to get more of a "tele twang" from the split...

hi there..
just reviving an old thread.
Any updates on the MM90 with dimarzio superdistortion (p90's size)?
I'm actually in the same situation and was thinking if it is doable without doing any routing? Thanks.

Pics would be great!!

Gday! from the land down under Sydney, Australia!

I got it done (tech did have to route the cavity deeper) and...I wouldn’t change it back ever...it is so versatile and I get a killer range of cleaner to more cutting tones simply from toggling between pickups.

I have played Duesenbergs, old Fenders, a Luke III, and a 1955 Les Paul Junior (sold it because this MM90 was getting all the love)...and after this mod, I get far more compliments on my guitar sound than I did with any of those other axes.
