I have just purchased a Music Man JP6 (yesterday) and have restrung it today using 9-42s 2223 (strings I normally use). I did one string at a time without any problems and the guitar tuned perfectly. However the tremolo angle had altered (lower towards its rear by about 5mm) and I noticed some lower fret buzz on strings 5&6, I also noticed the action had reduced by 0.5mm or so. Prior to changing the strings the tremelo angle was okay and the guitar played great.
Out of curiosity I removed the middle spring on the tremolo block (leaving the 2 outer fitted) and the tremolo returned to the correct angle. Rather than leave the spring out I put it back and loosened the two posidrive screws holding the tremelo spring block about 2 turns which again corrected the angle. The buzzing has stopped and the action is slightly lower. Initial playing test seems okay, I haven’t checked the intonation or neck relief.

My questions are:-

1. Is it best to leave the tremolo with 3 springs fitted or just use 2?

2. Do the tremelo springs have any other function other than balancing the string tension?

3. Will my next step be to check the neck relief and intonation and adjust as necessary, or won’t these be affected?

I did think it strange that the angle should change so I checked with the guy in the shop and he said he thought it came factory set up with 9-42s but I suspect it didn’t.

This is my first Music Man guitar.

Any advice appreciated.

It's personal preference what you would like. I prefer 3 regarless of string gauge.

JP has changes gauges lately so JP's are shipping with 009s now but for a while they were 010s.

The springs arent there for any other purpose as far as I know... except cool sound effects. :)

Definitely check the neck relief.

Hey guys, just to avoid confusion, JP is back to using 010's so that's what we're stringing them with before we ship them out. As Lou pointed out JP does change gauges periodically, so when he does we follow suit here at the factory.
