Hi!

I'm planning to buy Music Man Petrucci model guitar next to my Ibanez Jem7 bsb. But have a few questions:

-My friend owns a MM Petrucci model and strings in that guitar break ALL the time! If he buys new set of strings...plays a while and some string always breaks! Is this common to this model? Does this happen to you guys?

We are not rookies but professional musicians...so it's not like the guitar is set up poorly etc...Also a respected guitar tech checked out the guitar and did not find anything uncommon that could cause the problem! The guitar has also been at guitar service...they too didn't find any problem whatsoever...

-At thomann.de there are different pricing at petrucci models...for example one is about 1800€ while other is 2600€ or something. What is the difference in these models?

Thanks

Which string(s) in particular break? Just the high e or others? He's using 9's, I assume....is that right? Which string brand and type is he using (regular slinkys, RPS....)?

When restringing, I'll always bend the string at the bridge rather than let the tension bend it for me. Is he doing that? Also...is he using any kind of lubrication at the nut to keep the strings from binding. (I use graphite simply by using a pencil....it works). Where does the string break? At the bridge? At the end of the string? Somewhere else? Oh....and does he hit the whammy bar hard a lot? If so....how many springs in the trem?

On the pricing, JP's have numerous options available. The more options, the more expensive the guitar.

Usually strings break at the nut or saddle. Find out where the string is breaking and check for any burrs on the saddles or proper lubrication at the nut.

I haven't broken a string in ages! The last time I broke a string was on my 20th, and not my JP. And that broken string was like 5 months old?

It's definitely not a problem associated with the JP model...
or other EBMM models for that matter...

More specifics required to diagnose over the net..

100% agree with the other sentiments...

If it is set-up correctly, saddles are burr-free and the nut is appropriately lubricated you should have no dramas...

I've played 3-4 gigs a week solid for the last 12 months, only time i ever had a problem was when i had really burr-ed up a particular saddle. I removed the slight edge and voila, no dramas.

Wiping the neck and strings in between sets and after the gig will prolong string life also...
That's my 2 cents...

Ok!

Thanks from answers!

I know all these tips...like wiping the strings etc..like I said the guitar IS set up properly. I think he's using 10's...and the strings broke randomly...not like always high e-string..
This man here:

AJL-Guitars

checked the guitar and found no faults....and I think he knows a thing or two...because he builds guitars!

But anyway, what I wanted to hear is that the problem is not associated with the petrucci model! ;)

OT In 20 years of playing I think I've only broken a string once or twice. Why do some people break them much more than others? I'm not a lite picker by any means but don't really do any bends over one and half steps.

I have my JP6 for 6 months now , i often change strings cause my sweat is very corrosive and strings become rusty after one practise if I forget to wipe them.... the thing is I play hard, I use tremolo quite a lot and even with rusty strings like that I never broke a string on JP6.

Maybe his picking technique is the cause of this:confused:

This is very late to respond to, but here are some things you can do to prevent string breaking on your musicman. I'm assuming the string is snapping at the bridge, so what you can do is take some fine sandpaper and gently go over the inside of the bridge where the string bends. Manually bending your strings at the bridge before applying the strings is also a really good idea.

Otherwise, I found that on the rare occasion where i break a string on the JP6, it tends to be because of aggressive strumming. I've never snapped a string when using tremolo.
