I was just wondering how thick the neck is on these guitars compared to say a gibsons 50's or 60's neck. exact measurements and comparisons would be great thanks.

This is what I found on a Silo Special:

Size 12-1/4" wide, 1-3/4" thick, 36-1/2" long

As for Gibby.....I never liked them because of neck thickness. It was like holding a baseball bat to me.....so I never bought one. If I come across a neck thickness before someone else, I will post it for ya...

I used to be an LP player - I had a Joe Perry sig. with a MASSIVE neck and an anniversary Deluxe with a "60s" profile neck, and the Silhouette tends toward the 60's style neck in actual mass, but it's shaped quite differently, the frets are different and the scale length is differnt, so they don't really feel anything alike... in fact, nothing feels like a Musicman neck! They're the best made, imho!

OK....You owe me now. I just measured a Silhouette neck and a JP neck. The Sil was .8180 at the 1st fret and .9300 at the 12th. The JP was. 7285 at the 1st and .8380 at the 12th

Can anyone compare the neck of the Silhouette to those of the Axis and the Luke?

My situation is that I'm a beginner to the guitar. Learning the guitar is something I'd been thinking about for over 10 years, so on a whim I went into a guitar store late last year thinking that I'm 38 and if I don't do it now, I never will! I didn't know a thing about guitars except this: I admire Steve Lukather, Toto is one of my favorite bands, and Luke plays a Luke from EBMM. And if it's good enough for him, it is certainly good enough for me. :)

So I ordered a Luke, waited about three months, took it home and fell in love with it.

Except for the neck.

Although I had no experience with a guitar, I did play ukulele as a child. (If you're into ukulele, check out Jake Shimabukuro--the guy can play "Eruption" on ukulele. Amazing.) And the neck of the Luke was not what I was expecting as it is nothing like an ukulele neck, which is relatively flat while the Luke's is somewhat "V" shaped and a lot thicker.

My thumb just doesn't know what to do. I'd prefer a neck that is flatter and not as thick. (The thickness doesn't bother me as much as the point of the "V" on the back of the neck.)

Recently, I've been contemplating moving to a new guitar, one with a neck that would be more comfortable for me. I want to stay with EBMM as the Luke is a beautiful instrument, plays easily (except for that neck), and sounds great. The obvious successor would be the Silhouette Special (HSS) although the pickups are different so there's no guaranty it will sound like a Luke, and I don't care for that pickguard. But I've also been thinking about an Axis Super Sport.

I'd appreciate hearing from anyone who's played a Luke, a Silhouette, and/or an Axis and can tell me how the necks compare.

Thanks in advance!

Luke owner here.

Quite a lot of the Luke tone is the emg pickups along with the wood which is alder.

Eb's entire line of guitars is first rate (I also own a morse and 2 supersports--1 w/ mm90's/1 with humbuckers), but the guitar of mine that sounds closest to my luke is my strat that now has emg's in it...though it's the david gilmour emg's.

Norm (fellow poster and excellent player) put emg's in one of his silo's.

The luke pickups are available as replacement pickups from emg.

I'd play my strat way more if it was as comfortable as my lukes are to me. Just really wonderful tone from it now.

Like my Axis Sport and AL, I like my (sorta) new Luke's neck a lot - EBMM has neck work down to a science!

Dunno why, but the Luke doesn't feel as much like a "V" neck to me as it does to others here. My guess is it's 'cause I used to own a Clapton strat, which has a much more extreme "V" shape (and it's marketed as being a "soft V" as well), as well as a Steinberger Spirit, an all-wood import clone of their graphite necked but wood bodied GM line - the neck on those feels like a "V" at the top, narrowing down to a "C" at the bottom!

My assessment on the three:

- The Axis actually feels a bit flatter on the back than the other two...it has some body to it compared to speed demon necks from Kramer and Ibanez, but not badly so at all.

- The AL is has a more traditionally round back feel to it, falling somewhere between the comfortable feel of a "C" and the heft of a very shallow-to-midsized "U". I thought I'd be uncomfortable moving up in neck size on this one, but I actually think it fits just slightly better in my hand than the Axis.

- The Luke feels a lot like a good early 60s Strat to me, fairly close to the real mid-80's US '57 reissue strat I have, which oddly feels closer to a 60's "C" than a 50's "V" (their vintage repros from this era were criticized by purists for not being period correct, to my benefit here - they rectified this a few years later and I'm not a huge fan of their V's). It's sort of a nice combination of all of the above necks, actually.

I tried a Silo Special and a Radiance Red Luke side by side in a Guitar Center a few months ago, and the Luke won out on all counts, save for the Silo's awesome Autumn Sparkle paint job. The Silo was perfectly fine, but to me it just felt/sounded kinda bland compared to the Luke. Then again, I seem to like stuff that's different than usual, too! :p

All those necks seem to have a slightly offset feel to them, that undefinable thing where it's like they've been played a bit and they have a tiny bit more shoulder on the bass side, the Axis being the most extreme of the bunch for this. And I totally dig all of them!

It's not been recorded, as far as I know. However, his latest album ("Walking Down Rainhill") has a cover of "While My Guitar Gently Weeps."
