I just received my Sterling Classic today and damn is it a fine looking /playing beast! Its sound is very aggressive - does anyone have any advice on what strings to try that will keep the aggressive mids while tempering down the treble? I was thinking of trying some DR High Beams or even some bright flats. Any advice would be appreciated.

The factory strings are fine. Just roll off the treble control a bit.

You should not judge the tone of a bass by what you hear in the bedroom. I practice at home with the treble all the way down; when I get into a band situation, I bring the treble back to midpoint to better hear myself in the band mix. BTW, this same advice goes for recording. If you EQ the bass track so it sounds good when soloed, it gets lost in the mix.

That said, I do run TI Flats on my SR4 and BigAl 4, because I like the soft feel, less finger noise, and a tad less zing.

Gyver,
I only found this out a little over a week ago and I'm sure I am the last one to catch on to this but the 2 tone controls work like this.

The bass control is a boost only, so in the off position Bass is Flat. While the Treble control is a cut & boost, so mid way thru it's travel it is Flat.

So for me when I'm playing any old school tunes or finger style the Bass is off and the Treble is off. Then I add treble for any slap or pick attack.

Thanks for the advice, I finally had time to work with the bass some more and it is sounding sweet with the stock Ernie Ball strings. I did roll the treble off a bit as Rutgart suggested which helped and also noticed that rolling the volume off calmed the treble down a bit while maintaining the bass' clarity. I do like the idea of the TI Flats however...
