Hi,
can anyone help me? I have just bought a Silhouette on eBay. 6 bolt neck, what looks like an ash body, nice birds eye varnished neck, hard tail SSS. There is no 'Musicman' logo on the neck plate (or serial number) - though Music Man is stamped on the bridge.
Could this be one of the first Silhouettes? When did EBMM start using the MM logo on the neck plate?
Thanks,
tokaitelejohn

John, if you take the neck off sometimes there a date stamped or marked on the body or neck.

Take some pictures and post them, pictures can tell a story themselves.

Hope this helps a little bit, Glenn |B)

You know, I can't swear to this because I no longer own the guitar, but I think that my old six-bolt Silhouette had the serial number stamped in the wood of the neck, not on the neck plate... Do you have the guitar in hand yet? Is there a serial number on it anywhere?

Thanks to Glenn B and Jimi D for the info. I have not actually got the guitar yet but you have put my mind at rest in that the neck plates on at least some of the 6 bolters did not have the SN or MM logo stamped - when I checked for images on the web I saw only one example of a 6 bolter with the MM logo clearly identified. Anyway, I will post some pics when I get it.
This will only be my second Music Man. I used to have a Sabre II which I (very foolishly) sold back in 85. I've always regretted that move :(
John.

I had the same worries as you. I have the seriel number stamped on the back of the headstock but on the six bolt plate there is nothing at all. I don't trust myself to take the neck off; but I'm fairly sure it's all good because the quality of the guitar is brilliant.

I went back and did a search for one of the last times an early Silhouette was purchased off of eBay. Here is the link to the tread:

http://www.ernieball.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10418&highlight=Silhouette

About half-way down the first page Dudley Gimple describes how to read the stamped serial number, which on this very early Silhouette was 86010. In this case the first two digits were the year ("86" = 1986) and the last three digits were the running production total - so one of our members snagged EBMM Silhouette #10!

What I don't know is if that serial number nomenclature changed at any point while EBMM was still using the stamped serial numbers.

Let us know when you get it; always cool to uncover these old EBMMs!

Why don't you post a link to the ebay auction so we can see some pics?

Dude, looks nice, that's when they where making the Silo with 3 singles before they renamed it to the Silo Special. Pre silent circuit. The neck looks sweet!!! Lots of birdseye.

Nice price as well.

That guitar is sweet - it's a lot like the one Albert Lee used to play back in the ol' days before his sig. model! With the Hiscox case (great cases guys, for all you US sons and daughters that haven't had the opportunity to own/use one) you got yourself a terrific deal! :)
