To get US made, high quality instruments into the hands of more people. I'd say they succeeded too, because if you look around here you will see that it was the first ball for many of us, including myself :)

The Sub taught me just how overpriced SO many guitars are... afterall, take a look around and see how many guitars cost more than the Sub, yet are made in a sweatshop and lack the craftsmanship that the Sub has. Basically it was MM putting out a high end, all go and less show instrument at a midrange price. I love it :D

Basically just what SUB1ZERO said:
You get a great poplar body with less contour (a bit like a Morse) and a rough and tough finish. Mine is "cinnamon" which switches between purply-brown and somehow greenish depending on the angle the lights hit it.
You get a pretty cool maple neck which is finished, but has very smooth and fast action.
You virtually get a Musicman vintage trem and top-locking tuners (not the Schaller IND locking ones, but still: very good!) and great US made humbuckers that produce a unique and pleasant tone.
The craftsmanship on the SUB1 guitars and basses is perfect.

...after all - sadly EBMM could not continue producing these great guitars at thoses attractive prices which led them to stop that line last year.
There is a thread around from BP announcing that sad topic...

Try one out and I doubt you will not let it go for the money people normally ask for it...

It's the one sitting out on my chair right now. I think it's the lightest EBMM I own. So it's only got 22 frets and the board is rosewood. The action on mine is blistering low and it screams.

The SUB1 is pretty cool instrument and I play it rather often. I am saving it as a starter guitar for my kids! Helluva alot better than the lousy starter guitars I had as a kid.
