I was wondering who actually uses the mutes on his SR - after all they take away much of that SR bite.
But I really dig them for that old-school Motown-kind-of thump.

Let's hear some of your recorded examples of a muted Ray! Here's a short clip I recorded with GarageBand for iPhone, no effects: She Caught The Katy

I use them.

For the effect you mention. Screw the bite.

Sorry, not into recording. BTW to me the mutes make sense
on my FL cuz I can compensate the intonation as I play, but
on a fretted bass, they establish a whole new set of witness
points and the bass plays sharp ... more so as you move up
from the money zone.

I was doing some recording with a friend last summer and I used the mutes on a few songs just to get a different tone out of the bass and play around with how the recording would sound. I normally don't use them but there are times when I think the sound of the mutes on may sound cool so I use them then.

I use palm muting instead. Thanks Ed.

I use palm muting, too, but that's a different kind of animal. Palm muting may be more expressive and allows to vary the amount of pressure on the strings. But if I want to use my regular picking technique plus a muted sound the mutes are great.

Too bad I can't dial the mutes in on the fly - so I have to rely on palm muting for songs that require a clean and a muted sound.
