In fact I just put my boys to bed (12 & 8) with them asking "Daddy, what do you want to do tomorrow for Father's Day?"

I said the one thing I DEFINITELY wanted to do was to jam together!

Now you're talkin'! I can't think of a better way to spend Father's Day...unless maybe it's having them come up and play a gig When my son started playing drums, I was thinking, "Yes! Just like Abe Laboriel and Abe Jr!" ;-)

Let's see what the Mod's say. I think discussing what approach to lessons that would be useful for me as someone who already has music training but is not-so-good on the bass might be helpful to others.

Len - that is a great story - had me grinning from ear to ear. As a kid I just gravitated to anything with strings on it, and hoped my kids would love music, too. With my son, I gave him a very cheap pseudo Squier when he was 10, but he didn't show much interest at first. It wasn't until I picked up my own bass again after 14 years and he saw me play that the bug bit. Now, at 15 he's coming along very well on bass, and is picking up speed on drums and guitar - all self-taught. My youngest (6) also seems to be attracted to guitars - I've caught her wailing on her 1/4 sized acoustic while I practice. Too much fun! My middle 2 both sing, and one plays piano, too. I'm sure that your kids caught it from you - the joy is contagious!

Wow, Mobay!! Thanks! That makes my day. Anyone in the area...we play relatively often, but we currently have a regular gig at the Hard Rock Sunday afternoons at the Inner Harbor in Baltimore, which is nice, cause you can bring the family (and pay exhoribitant prices for a burger). Getting ready to go now...But dang...It's like 93 today.

This is my story about how I got into music.... if you want something long and boreing to read.

well my dad tried to get me started on guitar when I was around 8. first he bought an acoustic for my sister who has always been into singing and later went on to sing for .... "gigs" I guess you can call them. Anyway she wasn't into it so he tried to teach me. I learned liek a g or something but I was too young and had no role model or a want to even play really I wasn't into music. Then in 5th grade I got a flute and really liked it, it was fun to play the notes along to a song but I mean.. come on a flut? So one summer day inbetween 7th and 8th grade. My dad pulled out a old 1978 the paul. I never even knew he had. By this time I was getting into music, sum 41, linkin park alien ant farm. Bands that I HATE right now. And I wanted to learn to play it so bad. Thats what got me started I really loved to play and was good at it, but I laughed at the idea of being in a band. I wasn't serious about it, it was just fun. Then last year my dad took me to work with him and after we stoped at guitarcenter and picked up a bass. He said it would be good for me to learn incase a band ever needed a bassist instead of guitarist. At this time I was teaching my friend to play and it would be quite boring playing the exact same guitar lines to the same linkin park song. So I guess he was thinking one of us would have to play something diffrent. Anyway me and my friend took turns playing the bass we both hated it and really wanted to play guitar instead. I was trying to get him to keep it since I didn't want to play it. And we both thought it was stupid, looked rediculous and was for people who couldn't play guitar. We even made fun of one of our friends who said he played bass. To us it was like the weirdest things. Why would someone WANT to play bass?! But anyway the bass was a right hander and he was left handed so naturally I would play it more than him. Im not sure when I started playing red hot chili peppers but It was cool I liked playing the bass I guess if I had to. Then one day I was going to florida with a friend for vacation. I couldn't take my dads guitar so I took my bass and went. While I was there I didn't put it down. I think that was when I really fell in love with bass the chili peppers and the whole groove. Ever since then I have been playing bass and im trying a few bands, many of them are too simple I think and are not working out. But I love bass and will never stop playing.

hhhmm never been a fan of the thought of having kids... but these stories offer a little more encouragment..... great stories by the way..

i wish I got into it young. Got a bass when I was 19 because I was singing for a band and our bass player was heaviliy into heroin... and very unreliable so that got me keen. Didn't really touch it til I was about 20... then joined a band then moved interstate with a girl... basically didn't play for three or so years. picked it up more when I moved back home but I have only really knuckled down in the last 12 months or so.... and am starting to kick arse now but am 27... and feel like I have wasted 20 odd years by not playing...
