Congrats on your first Music Man! Stingray 5's are definitely a good time.

As far as mixing different tensions, the tensions in a typical set of 5's is pretty varied as it is. I don't think you'll experience any problems.

I've always been a big fan of the D'Addario XL's, but the DR's are great strings, as are the Ernie Ball Slinky's (I'm really digging the set on my new Bongo 5). Anyways, welcome and congratulations on your new bass!

Hi! Just got a used '89 SR5 :D. Sounds great, big growl and punch. Neck has awesome birdseye and is real glossy :p. There's a few scratches here and there, and the G string's saddle height adjustment screws are missing (need to get those somewhere). A few questions though...

The D string broke shortly after the bass was taken out of the case, and I had a spare 4 string set of TI Jazz Flats lying around, so I replaced all the strings but the B string. Will the higher tension of the B over the TI flats cause any damage or warping to the neck if I leave it on there for a while?

Also, I don't really like the the TIs, I'm looking for a nice set of rounds. Right now I'm thinking Lo-Riders or Hi-Beams, maybe. Any recommendations?

(oh yeah, pictures coming very soon :))

Pics!

Natural/black/rosewood.

It probably looks in better condition in the pics than it is :p

Some close up of the birdseye.

Back

Back of headstock. The G string tuner knob thing is loose.

Don't panic, the dots are reflections :p

I feel that this and the next picture show the true colour more, on my computer at least. It's a yellowy aged natural sort of colour or something. Very nice.

:D

Neck feels great. I don't notice that it's very thick or thin, so it must be a good size :p.

Actually, the TI Flats are starting to sound good now, but then again when I had the flats on my Jazz and put rounds on again the rounds sounded much more to my tastes :p. 'Tis confusing.

Darn nice Bass!

Can you let me know the serial number?

Have you got closeup pics of:

*the bridge

*and neck plate

I realise the neck plate is faceless but I need one for my website (for illustration).

My 92 SR4 neck looks very similar. Very nice SR5, btw!

My '92 fretless SR5 has a glossy finish on the back of the neck. My 2002 (?) SR5 has a matte finish which is faster IMO.

That's the oil and wax.

.
I did a search and found that lemon oil about once or twice a year is the best for the neck. Does that sound right?

Lemon oil for cleaning (and for conditioning rosewood). No more than twice a year, though. I have heard that too much lemon oil can actually damage a fingerboard.

Serial is 50912 (anagram of 90125 ) - your site says it had a tort guard? Does that mean the current guard isn't original?

Hey, thanks for the pics. They'll be very usefull.

You may be interested to know that your Bass (as at July 2004) was owned by a guy here in Australia. Turns out that he only lives about 6 miles from where I live. I dug out the Ebay add which I saved at the time. His price was $3,000AUSD.

The add shows a Black pg....don't know where I got "Tort" from unless I listed it even earlier from another owner.

I'll amend the list.

Thanks again :D
