Actually getting together to play with my old band mates has become a rare treat these last few years. We finally got to spend a full day jamming yesterday and I brought along my three newest basses.
The black and maple Ray was joy to play. With fresh Slinky's she is bright and snappy but has all the growl and punch I could ask for. The color has really grown on me and the guys loved it. This one is an absolute keeper.
The True Gold Bongo is actually the bass I have bonded with the least in my collection...until now! I think it simply came down to not being used to the 24 fret neck versus the 22 fret necks of my 5 string Rays. I was astounded at how good it sounded in the mix with the band and although it has a different flavor to its tone, she fits right in with my other Rays perfectly. And as you all know, the playability is second to none. Any reservations I had are all gone after finally getting to play this bass live for several hours. Although not a lightweight bass, its so well designed ergonomically that its very comfy to play standing up with her strapped on.
And finally, the bass I simply could not put down for most of the day. I have dreamed of a fretless Ray for years and when the chance came to own this one, I was beyond excited. I bought her used and just picked her up from my local guitar guru before our jam yesterday. He did a great job of sanding and buffing the fingerboard to take out a bit of wear from the previous owner. I was pretty out of tune for the first few minutes as I haven't played much fretless in the past few years, but I was amazed at how fast I settled in and felt unstoppable on this tone machine all night. I went to bed last night with big grin on my face thinking of this bass and the tone I had playing her and could not be happier.
