Hi guys, I'm new to this forum, but if any of you guys here are regulars on talkbass, I'm on there as fenderbassabuse.

Today, I went to the bass gallery in london to try out what is now my new stingray. All the info I could get from them was is that is mid 80's,2 band eq, stripped finish and a rosewood board. It also has a clear pickguard.

Being the type of person that I am, I wanted to know exactly what year the bass is. I managed to find a database for musicman basses, and as the s/n begins as BO23 and ends in 18, has musicman stamped tuners and bridge (with mutes), I looked at the headstocks and found one with the same logo as mine, but is BO22041 which dates it as mid june, 1985. Would this mean mine is an 85? Or is it an 86? Are there any ways to find out for certain about its age?

Apologys if this has been covered many a time.

Many Thanks

Serial numbers are not chronological, so can be hit and miss on occasions. The only sure way to confirm the manufacturing dates is to remove the neck and read the dates stamped in the neck pocket and on the end of the neck itself.

The serial number gives a good clue to its age, but isn't very precise in certain cases. Yours being one :)

Gav's website gives a number of dating methods that you can use.

...but the surest method is to take the neck off and read what it says on the heel and in the neck pocket. The date the body was finished and the frets were dressed will be there.

We need photos, by the way :)

You know, people say "Great minds think alike" but having studied animal behaviour just a bit, I find that to be inaccurate.

Now sheep - sheep think alike.
