Just Bought a Silhouette

Just purchased a slightly used Silhouette on ebay, got it for around $650 shipped. It was manufactured in 1994 according to the serial number. It's an SSH(no it's not a special), the silhouette was produced in the SSH configuration before the Special was released. The body is swamp ash, in a honeycomb sunburst, positively beautifully made(it's a 2 piece, but the seam is practically invisible). It has a finished maple neck with a rosewood fretboard and has a hardtail bridge. It really is an amazing guitar, as any silhouette owner can attest.

I have a few problems though, It had a beautiful, bright tone when I pulled it out of the shipping box and tuned it, but on the bass strings it has an annoying buzz acoustically and through the my amp. I took it to the MusicMan factory in San Luis Obispo, a fifteen minute drive from my home, I have a friend who is a sales representative for EB/MM and he had one of the techs look at it for me. He restrung it, adjusted the trussrod, did a nice fret polish, adjusted the pickup height and the saddles.

Unfortunatly he couldn't get rid of the buzz, and for some reason the guitar didn't sound as full when I got it back. It was shipped with slinky 10s, and thats what their tech replaced them with. My suspicions are the pickup height, my amp or my imagination. My amp is a Crate G40C with 2 Celestron G8L-35s, I got it for $25 from work(I work at an electronics store/service/repair shop), we had taken it in over a year ago for checkout and maintainence, since the owner never came to pick it up, I took it upon myself to take it home and 'test' it out(just to make sure it worked). It's a pretty old amp, sounded great, at least compared to my little practice amp. But it's a little touchy, sometimes won't go into channel A(distortion), it perodically will stop ampliphing for a while and have to be shut off and turned back on, and sometimes I can't turn off reverb after turning it on. Given that it's not a very reliable amp may be part of the problem.

Regardless, anyone have any ideas on the novel I just typed? I think I'm probably gonna need to have the frets stoned, I tried adjusting the trussrod, and got rid of the buzz by raising the action substantially, but it's not quite as comfortable to play now. Any idea how much it would cost to do that? Either way I'm having alot of fun with it, hopefully things will turn out for the better.

Also I was wondering if there was much difference between the silhouette and the silhouette special in terms of tone, besides the silent circuit, 24 vs 22 frets. And how much difference is there between swamp ash and alder? Too many questions. Maybe I should just play it and not worry about how it sounds, and so I digress.

FYI on the pickup config.....they didn't just offer the HSS, the HSH was the default, they did offer however SEVERAL different replacement guard combinations that were fully wired up and ready to go....a Molex connector is used so the pickguards were just plug and play, no soldering required. Have you tried raising the action slightly on the guitar on the bass side?

Funny...That guitar didn't buzz for me. It played nicely when it left the shop. Then you took it home, and did a "set up" of your own making it necessary to bring the guitar back to me to undo your "set up". Interesting.

My guess is that it's the celestron speakers in your amp.

There was no buzz when you brought is in, and there was no buzz when it left my shop

I owe you an apology jon, I wanted to shorten the story a bit, didn't know you were on here, I should have just asked you when I was there. Yes, I adjusted the action myself, bringing it way up. Dan told me it shouldn't be that high, though the neck wasn't warped when I checked it out, he told me to bring it back anyways. So I brought it in a second time, sorry about that, I didn't want to bother you with it. I know man, absolutly, I heard you play it, I don't mean to imply that you didnt' set it up properly, you did an awesome job and went out of your way to help me out, and I really appreciate it. It's just gotta be the way I play or this darn amp, I've only been playing for a year and probably don't have that much finess, I'm probably striking the strings too hard, but everyone I've heard play the guitar except Jon has had a very noticable buzz on the bass strings. The electric I had before this was a cheapo harmony strat clone I got for free, couldn't stand it, so I played my martin instead, which I can strike the strings as hard as I want and not produce a buzz. It still seems out of place to me on an electric though. I try to play softly but the buzz just seems to make it frusterating playing lead with it and trying to use the full range. As for the tone, somehow it seems to have come back on it's own, I have no idea what the deal is with this amp. Appreciate what you've done for me Jon, big time, I think this baby just needs to have the frets stoned. I tried adjusting the saddles a bit on the bass side, but it doesn't seem to get rid of it. Thanks for the suggestions though. I do have a question for you though, jon, do you think the action was high enough to damage the guitar when I brougth it in, I just had it high enough not to produce a buzz for when I played normally, or so I thought? argh, I feel like such an ingrate.

I wouldn't blame you if you thought I was a snot-nosed punk man, I sure feel like one. The reason I posted on here was because I didn't want to bother you, you don't get paid to provide free service and then get annoyed because of an obsessive compulsive customer like me.
