Hi all. For those of you who remember, I´m the one who bought the 20th Anniversary Trans Black SR5 signed by Tony Levin at the charity auction on eBay about 10 months ago. For those who doesn´t remember:

Tony Levin signed Trans Black 20th anniversary SR5

Just wanted to write an update and let you guys know what is going on regarding that bass and my other SR´s.

I´ve used the trans black SR5 quite alot on recordings and I just love it (!!) but I don´t dare to take it out on the road because of it´s history. So I´ve managed to get ahold of another 20th Anni SR5 in Germany along with a fretless 20th SR5. So I now have three 20th Anni SR5´s. Fantastic instruments indeed. But that is not all since it seems that I´ve gone totally bonkers. I sold, along with some other basses I´ve had but not used much lately, my fretless 4-string Stingray and got ahold of a fretless 30th Anni Stingray (Thanks Bovinehost!!). That one arrived yesterday. Fantastic and MUCH better than the one that I sold. Wonderful tone. I´ve also bought a trans orange SR4 with matching headstock that I´ve set up with foam under the strings by the bridge. It does take too much time to do this on stage so I felt that I needed one just for this type of sound to avoid hassle when playing live. Sounds great.

So I´ve gone from four to seven Stingrays in less than a year. And all of them except the trans orange SR4 are anniversary models since I´ve had a 20th anniversary 4-string since -96 and also a fretted 30th anniversary that I also found in Germany awhile back. Three 5-string and four 4-string. Couldn´t be happier with my basses. Very versatile and I just love that massive but still very defined low end. I use a Höfner violin bass on recordings accationally for that flatwound 60´s sound but other than that, it´s pretty much only EBMM Stingrays these days and I have a feeling that it will stay that way. I have NEVER before been this happy with instruments that I have and use. So hats off to the folks at Ernie Ball. Great work, folks! Here are som pics:

Thanks all. Very kind indeed. Upon request. Full frontal shots....

20th Anniversary 4-string from -96. I´ve had her since she was new. Absolutely wonderful. Very light in weight. Fantastic player. Love her.

20th Anniversary 5-string fretted from -07. Found this one in Germany. Since I don´t dare to take the trans black out on tour I figured that i should try to find another one and use on gigs. Massive low end and very defined middle. I will bring her back to Germany soon since I´ll do gigs there ahead again. She is definately coming with me back home to Sweden after the tour is over. :)

20th Anniversary 5-string fretless from -07. This one doesn´t have a matching headstock. I´ve never seen any fretless 20th anni 5-strings with matching headstock actually. Don´t know if there are any. Great fretless.

20th Anniversary 5-string trans black signed by Tony Levin from -07. Hard to do her justice in pics. Looks soo much better IRL. I do use this bass quite alot in the studio since I´m not a collector in that sence. Instruments should be played but I do take it rather easy with this one. Sounds and looks marvelous.

20th Anniversary 5-string trans black signed by Tony Levin from -07. Head shot.

20th Anniversary 5-string trans black signed by Tony Levin from -07. Rear.

30th Anniversary fretted from -06. Found this one in Germany too. Rather light in weight for being a 30th Anniversary and an amazing instrument.

30th Anniversary fretless from -06. Got this home just a couple of days ago. Great thanks to bovinehost (Jack). I had another SR fretless but that one did not sound as good as other fretless Stingrays I´ve played. Dont know why. So I traded her in for the trans orange below in the same music store as I bought it when this 30th fretless emerged. Wonderful fretless tone. Really sings... Couldn´t be happier.

Regular trans orange Stingray with matching headstock. Don´t know how old it is. Most likely from -06 or -07. Or -05. It has the new nut. will check with the serial number here in the forum. I´ve rigged her up with foam under the strings. Fantastic sound indeed.

Hard to make them justice in photos but they are beautiful. Don´t know why but it seems like I fancy them anniversary models. Not just when it comes to looks but also the craftmanship. Good fun. I´m not a collector at all. They are my working tools and I use them. I do enjoy good quality instruments and I always try to find instruments that are abit special. Don´t ask me why but I do find it hard to get excited over regular off the shelf instruments. I get lots of inspiration from my basses and the fact that they are bit more rare than some other instruments out there. Hard to explain but I enjoy them a great deal. They are fantastic. Thanks for now.

Sincerely//Jan

:D Nope. :D Seven Stingrays are soo much more fun to own than a whole country. My other pride and joy are the nine Wal basses that I have. One Pro1E, fretted and fretless Mk I + Mk II + Mk III´s. Even have two Wal Midi basses. Beautiful and has proven to be a better investment than anything. But I don´t use them that much. Handmade in Britain for those of you who are not familiar with Wal. The Stingrays are my work tools. And it´s inspiring to have the best sounding basses on the planet to work with. Just love the Stingrays. Couldn´t be happier. Best basses on the planet indeed. As we all know.... :)

A truly inspiring collection Jan. I think I'd have almost died and gone to heaven if I owned a set like that. You're a very fortunate man. I'm also glad to hear that they are all used. As much fun as a collection sitting on the wall might be, the best place for a Musicman is coming out the speakers!!

Thanks for the update.

Awesome collection!

Nine Wals?!?!?!

About ten years ago I played a used Mk.II that was for sale in a shop in Oslo. It was $1000. It was really, really good. I thought about buying it and I should have, but I didn't. Instead, like a #&*§%#& moron, I bought a passive Fender Jazz 5-string. You know, the model that didn't really work. So thanks a lot Jan, for bringing that to my memory! Aaaaaaaarrrgghhh!

j/k ...you're a lucky guy with many fine basses. :)
