Just wanted to take a moment to proudly present my student, a very talented girl: María Elisa.

Yes. One of the assignments she has for this vacation time is learning Van Halen's "Eruption" (the tapping part).

That's some assignment!
And that also means she is already a frighteningly technical bass player, which can never be a bad thing.
Sometimes I wish someone had forced me to practice during my informative years, but then I remember I started playing to get chicks:D

Well, it's a hard task for sure, but she isn't intended to play it at Eddie's tempo. What I look for when my students practice this is that they can play it at a very slow tempo strictly using a metronome, but having the pitches, rhythm and tone (this last aspect creates a really nasty blister in your right middle finger -if you're right handed-) under perfect control. Speed is a matter of time (and keep practicing, for sure) after having the foundation. BTW, if anybody wants my transcription of the piece in standard notation plus tab, just let me know your e-mail address. I also have a recording of me playing it at two different tempos (tempi?).

Does that mean your student followed your lead and got herself a Bongo, or are you letting her play yours?

That's mine. In fact, she doesn't like five stringers. If she ever gets a Bongo it will be a 4-string. Right now I'm the only Bongo owner in my town and many, many miles around, for sure. I'd like to have a proof that the F13353 is the first Bongo in Colombia.

Hello Maria! When you get 'Eruption' down, we want (read: would like) a clip of your progress.

You know...I think I'm in the same boat here in the Bay Area. I've yet to see any bass players here sporting a Bongo on stage.

All the more reason why I'll hang onto mine! :D

To tell you the truth, I find tapping to be much easier on bass than guitar. Actually I dont think tapping is all that hard. But maybe I'm just not trying anything hard.
