Not too much pron since it's a pretty standard black JPXI:
So I recently acquired this little gem from the sevenstring.org Marketplace! An awesome member by the name of tmfrank sold me this little guy. Obviously, the thing that drew me to it was the signatures (plus he gave me a deal I couldn't refuse). Not only did the Master himself sign it, but Rudess signed it too! My two favorite musicians in the world have both touched this axe. I couldn't have a bigger har don for this guitar if I was reincarnated as Mandingo genetically spliced with Ron Jeremy and Michael Clark Duncan (I assume...).
Obviously, it's a JPXI so it plays wonderfully - SS frets, 20" radius, CL/LF pup combo - pristine piezo, BFR badge (yay!), ebony board, and the world-famous floating trem. This thing plays like a dream. Perfect intonation up the fretboard. I only got a couple hours with it so it's hard to compare it with my Majesty and JP13 7-strings as far as sound goes, but it's supremely playable. The whammy bar swings free and the the bridge flutters as beautifully as you'd expect from a JP. I think the 6-string JPs have a little more of the magical flutter than the 7s. I imagine it has to do with the necessary tension (or lack thereof) to cause it to bounce back and forth when slammed or slung-shot.
There's only a couple issues, and they're nothing big; there are a few chips in the headstock (as stated in the ad) and the D-string buzzes a little when played open. But I don't mind a little buzz. If it ain't buzzin, the action ain't low enough.
tmfrank was a great seller - I contacted him on the 23rd of May and got it today (27MAY2014). After the price was determined, we discussed the most convenient and viable payment options. We ended up using PayPal. I paid him a majority of the cost the first day, then the remainder when I had the guitar in hand. Easy peezy. We had great communication throughout the whole process.
About the signatures... I haven't decided what I'm gonna do. I have thought of several options:
Let them be - there's a thrill knowing the signatures could rub off at any moment (yes, even sharpie comes off guitars lol) and to live in fear of such happening would be antithetical to my existence.
Use a urethane-based spray to immortalize the signatures but otherwise ruin the nice finish of the guitar in that spot - AND making the signatures un-removable in case I ever want to sell it and the buyer doesn't want some random dudes' scribbling all over their new axe.
Something in-between; like maybe a ipad screen protector cut and vacuum/static sealed to the guitar in the area of the John (and Jordan) Hancocks.
Anyway, I'm very happy with my new guitar. I can't wait to change strings in a couple weeks and clean up the fretboard a little.
I never thought I'd be this in love with a 6-string! I'll be posting some family pics soon with all my EBMMs and Carvins!
Cheers, all!
tmfrank describes the event: "As for how I got the guitar signed, I saw them on the first tour they played supporting the "Dramatic Turn of Events" album. After the show, I ran to get my guitar case from my car and quickly ran back to where they had parked their bus behind the venue. I barely made it, but they had just started to walk out the back door and were just beginning to sign autographs. So I waited for maybe ten minutes before I got a little bit of face time with our lord and savior Petrucci He was super down to earth and even said that he was honored to see me holding the guitar! It was surreal, truly. I finally decided to sell the guitar once I realized the memory of that night would live on forever, and that I no longer needed the guitar to remind me of it."
