Maybe you guys have already seen something like this, but for kicks, I removed the pickguard from my HS Stingray just to see what was underneath. (Ya, ya, call me prurient if you like. :p)

I didn't expect to see the phantom coil. (If that's what it is.)
I'd heard that the pickups were mounted directly to the body. I was hoping that they were attached to the pickguard, so I could move the neck pickup closer to the neck.

Nevertheless, it's a beautiful guitar, and it sounds great! :D

With the sterling h the phantom coil is underneath the humbucker. The advantage of the pickups being in the body is you can change pickguards in 2 minutes.

True dat ... where it applies.

IOW, not true where it don't.

IOOW, if swapping PGs in a 2 minute "pit stop"
so as to switch from dance funk to ballads, and
back again, with appropriate cosmetics for each
genre, reeeeally mattered to the MM designers,
then how would you justify the SR5's design :-/

Im not saying it was designed for the purpose of fast and easy pg changes, just saying this is an advandage over other designs... for instance changing pg on a strat or sr5 is much more work.

Annyway. I am in favor of the pickups being mounted directly to the body. Just looks and feels more sturdy to me. But not in the way old teles are done, to adjust their neck pickups you have to remove the pickguard... im actually thinkin of drilling 2 holes in my tele pg so i can adjust the neck pickup height without removing the pg.

Annyhow, back to the original post, its too bad most of that burst is hidden underneath the guard but sr4's arent sr4's withouth pg.

+1 LOL, I was wondering what the f those things were. I thought it was tape residue or something, but it wouldn't make sense 'cause the PG isn't that wide. Anyway, looks pretty serious w/o the PG. I should pull the PG off my white one, fill the screw holes with Wite Out, and then when people come up after a show & tell me they've never seen a SR w/ 3 pickups, I can lie and say it was made for me in the EBMM Custom Shop.

The funny thing is, that the Phantom coil corresponds to the neck coil in a double humbucker setting with Position 2 of the 5-way switch being the outer and Position 4 being the inner coils.

Def. agree with that. It's taken on a slight "WTF look."

One thing I noticed about taking the PG off is there's a lot more meat exposed on the bridge PU's cover to anchor my thumb against. I was having minor issues with the PU cover scoop. No big deal, just a slight irritant. I'd been thinking of gluing a rubber foot to the PG for a thumb anchor, same as I did on my Pbasses, but I just couldn't bring myself to f up that nice tort. (I mean, the plastic isn't even off it yet.) Also the anchor would've had to be about a cm further north than I prefer. Now I've got that extra couple mm of PU cover. Feels totally different, very much good.

I can't do floating thumb or string anchoring, unfortunately. Utmost respect for those who can.
