Hi,

Need some help. I got an Axis Super Sport a couple of months ago.

Been busy so I've been playing my practice guitar for 5 minutes here & there for the last month or so. The Super Sport sat in its case unplayed for the entire time, tuned down a whole step. I pull it out yesterday & it seems the neck straightened out totally & it's all buzz now.

Kicker is I'm also deploying to Kuwait for a year at the end of the month.

The question is, should I go & get the neck set up now, or can I wait until I get back from Kuwait? I probably need to get the neck set up when I get back, in either case. I'm just wondering if it's bad for the neck to leave it unadjusted while I'm away.

Regardless, I imagine the best way to store it for the year is to just leave it in the house, tuned to E.

Thanks for any help.

I agree with Ozzy...

Crab,

Very easy adjustment to make. Will take you 1 minute total.

Climate/humidity factors can do this to a neck. My Axis and Luke necks do this all the time because I live in Hawaii and we have a lot of humidity flux and I set my necks for low action. This leaves very little room for neck bow and subsequent string height variations/fluctuations, ie: the bow of the neck. Just a little change in the neck and I am buzzing at times. Don't worry it is as easy as turning a wrench in one direcion.

All you need to do is adjust the truss rod about 1/4 inch in the up position when viewing the guitar as you play it. Some folks call it lefty loosey righty tighty.

Use an allen wrench or something else that fits into the hole in the pivot wheel. Pull back about 1/4 inch. Wait a minute or two. Then see if that does the trick. Sometimes just a bit of pressure in the proper direction of the neck will aid in the adjustment. Some times you may have to adjust the pivot wheel a bit more, but do it in slight increments. Do not adjust it too much at one time. Make small adjustments, (1/4 inch turn, ie: travel distance of the small whole in the pivot wheel), wait and check to see if the neck bow has corrected, apply a small amount of pressure on the neck in the direction of neck correction. Rinse and repeat to desired action.

I adjust my necks all the time. I would give it a try before you leave in order to ease your mind. Store it in a dry area of your house/condo/apt that doesn't get a lot of humidity, (NOT the laundry room). :D

Good luck.

Cheers,

Tom

I hear people often say they detune a guitar for storage. I have never understood that. I left a Guild archtop pretty much in its case from 1978 to 2008 in tune under the bed. It's fine, now that I play guitar again.

I agree, never understood why any one would detune whether for storage or shipping. Just keep it tuned normal in the case in a climate controlled environment and all will be well when you return. Thanks for your service to our country and I like crablegs, now I am hungry:)

No, thank you all for being the...uh... country being served... ha. Yes, I will miss crablegs the most.

Thanks for all the replies. Just squeamish at actually bending the wood on my own. All these years, never had a neck do that to me, not even much cheaper guitars. I know it's not a quality thing. It's just "one of those things."

Thanks Zerofivefour for the particularly detailed answer & for considering my state of mind.
