Hi all,
I am experiencing a problem with my '93 Stingray 4, which I bought about 1/2 year ago. This nice bass looks as new, and is hardly played at all looking at the fretwear. I've adjusted the neck once, with a gap of 0.1 mm at the 8th fret when holding down the strings at 1st and 16th fret.
This adjustment worked fine, with an action just low enough for a good slap-sound. Played it with much pleasure, until fret buzz appeared a few weeks ago.
The neck bowed away from the strings, so I turned the truss rod nut counter-clockwise 1/8 turn and waited a day. No result, so another 1/8 turn and waited. And so on, and now I find that the nut is almost complete loose and still not have the adjustment I made earlier. And get stuck with the fret buzz that comes with a too straight neck.
I suspect the problem is relative humidity. Especially now that I find that the frets are just a tiny little coming out of the sides of the fretboard, it seems like the wood is so dry that it has shrunk.
How to get the neck in shape again? I have read things like putting your bass with wet sponges into closed guitar cases
. Or soaking the fretboard with lemon oil to make the neck less vulnerable to relative humidity.
What would be the best method, or is the problem something else. Thanks for your advice!!
