Neck finish question

I love the finish on the neck on my Steve Morse. Enough that I want to use tru oil on my Tele build.

If this isn't considered an inappropriate question: does anybody know whether EBMM uses any kind of sealer below the tru oil?

I have seen people claiming that you should use a sealer like shellack below tru oil, because the oil gets far enough into the wood, then hardens and ends up dampening the sound. Guessing from the sound of my Morse, whatever EBMM is doing is about perfect, hence the question.

P.S. speaking of necks, does MM have any wide nut (1-11/16") options other than the Petrucci?

Tru Oil is a sealer. It penetrates wood and hardens, then buffs to a purdy sheen. It wouldn't "dampen sound" any more than a nitro or poly finish would. Less, I'd imagine.

Let me add, imo, there's a lot of voodoo about guitar finishes, and if you believe something, lo and behold, it's true to you. I've refinished a fair share of furniture professionally, and it really isn't very complicated. My favorite oil was Watco Danish Oil, and I have no doubt that it would work just fine on MM necks. But I've also refinished rifle stocks, and it was hard to beat Birchwood Casey Tru Oil for that. If reasonably cared for, they just get nicer with age (like us old guitar players ). This too may be voodoo, but I think Tru Oil has a warmer and more natural feel than Watco or Minwax. I think it wears faster too, which may mean its thinner, which is s'posed to be a good thing. All I know is it's ruined me for playing painted necks.

I've sealed a guitar body with tru oil and then waxed it - turned out really nice.

Use it on the neck and I don't think you'll be disappointed.
