I'm just posting this to see if anybody else has done this. When I bought my Sterling 4H a couple years ago, I decided to spray the back of the neck with a satin clear - Minwax polyurethane - BECAUSE I didn' like the idea of the oil/wax blend for 2 reasons. 1. Being more susceptible to humidity changes. 2. I noticed on the "used" MM basses at GC that the necks were filthy with all kinds of funk. I had owned MM basses in the past and they used to use a satin clear poly on the back, which is what I think would be best, but, hey, I'm not in charge over there. I recently picked up my new Sterling 5 HS and I just sprayed that neck today. It came out great just like my 4 stringer! I have rosewood boards, so I just taped off the edge of the board, bagged the headstock with a lunch bag and took care of bidness. Yeah, I took the neck off the bass. Now, dirt won't get "into" the grain and require sanding to remove. Works for me. Anyone else done this?

No. If it gets funky (which has never happend to me) just steel wool it and re-wax-oil.

My Ray5 is due for it's next cleaning/oiling.

Edit: I did do the spray on poly to a bass that i built myself though-didn't turn out so well. So i sanded it down and finished it with oil and wax.

I love the feel of the satin oil/wax finish. It's what really turned me onto to EBMMs a few years back. I can not play Fenders anymore with their shiny necks. Laklands have the same feel on the back of the neck.

The other thing is I think it is not really the case that the oil finished necsk are susceptible to humisity changes. I have a San Dimas Charvel unfinished neck I've had since 1983. No problems, very stable.
