Hi there, this is something I've been curious about for awhile and decided I may as well ask on here. Is there a specific measurement for the thickness of a bass's (or guitar's) neck from the fingerboard to where your thumb rests on the back of the neck? In other words the thickness from left to right in this picture:

For instance I feel like (and I may be off about this) my Stingray's neck is thicker than my Reflex's neck in this regard. A more pronounced difference seems to be with P and J basses. For the longest time I thought that's what "neck radius" meant but I understand that has to do with the curvature of the fret board. I've always been surprised that there isn't some standard measurement for this, as it definitely plays a big role in how the neck of an instrument feels. Maybe I'm missing something. Would love some insight, thanks!

I agree with you - I find my early 90s Stingrays have more curve to the back of the neck (making them feel slightly thicker) whereas the more recent ones have a flatter curve (thinner) - my blue dawn 2007LE has the thinnest of all of them and I find it the fastest neck to play of my Musicman basses. I had put the marginal differences down to the hand finishing process.
