What I want to know is exactly what effect inlays have. What if you were to make a Sterling bass but instead of the normal dot markers it had something larger, like maybe a martini glass? How would that change the tone?

It would be drier - and the tone would be more shaken than stirred.

More attackiness than beer, to be sure.

yo strummer, but you do see my point? I personaly have been in that situation where i was running across town, had to skip the drug store, made it to the club only to kill the first set, and then go from hero to zero when my active bass died.

In a way, yes. But I think you will have to weigh in the fact that most players do not feel the need for a passive/active switch on the bass, and that a Bongo won't go from hero to zero in a heart beat. That is why I suggested you wire one up yourself. I once put real crappy batteries in my Bongo (the sound was clearly distorted and somewhat lower in volume) and left it plugged in for two weeks. After two weeks it still had sound, about the same as when I put the batteries in. On a Bongo, specifically, I therefore think it is safe to assume that you will have sufficient warning before the batteries die.

I would never personally tinker with the electronic in this bass. I think they're perfect. Screw aguilar preamps. I love this preamp. i hear what you mean on the tone control bi-pass. I think i'd like both actually. the gig saver and then "stop messing with it" saver

Then hand over the bass to a well known luthier to wire the active/passive switch. The tone defeat'll probably be a totally different issue, though, and I suggest we both just keep dreaming about that one;)
