This was originally started in the "My new stingray...." post by cold_lump. I wanted to start a new post at the risk of straying from cold_lump's original post too far.
Anyway, I was asking about the feel and sound of various neck woods, such as ebony and pau fero.
Aussie Mark on ebony: Ebony is a very close grained smooth timber that to me feels very nice under my fingers. My '94 G****n L** P*** bass has an ebony fingerboard and has one of my favorite necks to play.
cold_lump on ebony: ebony is a very very bright sounding wood. compared to rosewood anyway it has a very audible difference. im not real sure how it compares to maple though as it would have to be on the same brand/model guitar with the same pots caps and pickups etc to really compare and i only play gibson guitars and they dont use maple on their fingerboards. so for example i couldnt compare a gibson lp custom w/ ebony to a gibson lp ? with maple.
i talked to a guy once that said he played a bass once with ebony and he said he love it of all his basses.
I know rosewood has a more bassy tone to it and maple is basically the opposite of rosewood - sharp and bright.
Can any of you speak on the sound and feel of these woods?
- Pau Fero
- Birdseye maple
- Zebrawood
- Cocobolo
- Mahogany
- Walnut
The last couple of woods sound very odd, I know. I saw them on a custom bass by Darrin Huff and they looked very nice. As I said, does anyone know how these various woods sound and feel as necks and fingerboards?
Thanks
