The weather in Texas has been crazy this winter. One day 80 the next day 30 with humidity swings about as bad. Thus the neck on my Axis is flexing like crazy.

The problem is after adjusting the neck and tuning the guitar other positions, specifically B string 5th fret, are sharp. Do I need to do a complete setup? is this due to intonation being out of wack?

I flew to buffalo before christmas with one of my axis. it was fine there, no problems, then when I came back the strings were flat against the neck. I prefer extremly low action because I have arthritis pretty bad in my wrists and knuckles, but that was a remarkable change. the first axis I got has only had to be set up once, so I've been extremly fortunate. generally, EBMM's necks are stable enough that for you to be having intonation problems may denote you needing a setup. something that happened with my peavey wolfgang (go ahead, laugh) this winter was the frets popping out of their seats. I've found the wolf's neck to be stable, but not as good as the axis, so it didn't surprise me that the ceck contracted and expended enough to actuallly knock the frets about. it took 2 rounds of fretwork before ALL the frets were back to normal. the oddest thing was that once the lower register was cleaned up, all of a sudden the higher frets started going sharp. what I was told had happend was slight changes in the wood (plus the frankly not too great factory fretwork) had distorted the frets profile enough that they had to be leveled and crowned. I've heard this same thing happened to 2 other peole in the last couple of winters.

When the neck moves (due to temp, humidity, adjusting or whatever) the distance between the nut and bridge changes. Intonation is altered as a result. I am working on some ideas about intonation that may be pretty cool. 3 words. Best Fit Curves.

Is this something I can do myself with a standard tuner? Erlewine charges $125 for a setup so I need to learn this myself. Of course I could buy his brothers book...

Sure! Just strap it in and hoist 'em up ;)

The FAQ does a really good job at telling how to do it. The book has pictures that are worth a thousand words each.

125 for a set up thats crazy . i dont care who his brother is. you should be able do it yourself with a decent tuner. or at least find a shop with more reasonable rates.
