I know this is a bit off topic, but I trust the opinions of tonemeisters here...

I play in a church where there are no wedge monitors. I bring my amp and can use it as a monitor, but I can't hear the vocals... so my nice earplugs won't do (it is LOUD on stage with the drums and I protect my ears). We use an Aviom system and in the house the bass sounds great... I just need a good representation of this for monitoring.

I can't seem to get IEMs to sound right (especially in the low frequencies) and have isolation (went up to Shure SLC5s and still am unimpressed). I need to capture the Bongo tone.

My AKG K55s (cheapie headphones) blow them away in terms of bass response. Alas, the isolation from outside sounds is poor.

Can anyone recommend something to fit this application in the $100 range? I've heard Sennheiser 280s are good... but I need to go somewhere to try them out I guess.

Yes, I know it may look goofy to have headphones, but I'm secure with my manhood :) In truth, I hang in the background and the drummer also uses cans.

Thanks everyone

$100 range...

I've had the Sennheiser HD280s and they are good...for that price range. I recently switched to the Sony MDR7506s and prefer the way my Bongo sounds through them.

I'm sure there is better stuff out there, but in the $100 range that is my take on it.

mynan,
Thanks so much for sharing your experience with the headphones. Could you give me a little detail about what you liked about the Sony's over the Sennheiser's. In particular I'm looking to see how the Bongo's Low B sounded as well as the amount of sound isolation.

much appreciated!

I have a set of Sennheiser HD212Pro's, which have great bass response, and good isolation, as they were designed to be DJ headphones. I can wear them in my basement, and not hear my wife calling me from 5 feet away, which has happened countless times!

IMO, the Sonys are more defined in the lower range. It's been a while since I've used the Sennheisers, but I can't say that I noticed a difference in noise cancellation. The Sonys are also constructed better, IMO.

I bought my church a Buttkicker low freq transducer. Use with IEMs. This gives a very very solid bass experience live. The bongo rocks set up like this.

I had a chance today to try a friend's Sony MDR-V6 and was very very impressed with the sound quality

The isolation was pretty good but not great. However the headphones were a bit worn down.

I'll probably get these or the 7506s.

Thanks for the information!
