Need help to be a first time MM owner.

Hi,I must say I never thought that I'll be in this forum.
I'm the usual LP'ish, Fender'ish type of guy until recently, when I saw a couple of Axis's (?) for sale. Now, I need your help to decide which one I should get.
Both are used, but of similar conditions. One is a super sport in transparent blue with very nice flame top and very dense bird-eye maple neck with vintage trem.,the other is an Axis with so so guilted top and plainish maple neck with Floyd- Rose in beautiful transparent pink!, but about 20% more expensive. I have no idea what years they were made, I play some blues and have no real need of a trem..I am sure that both of the highest quality and playability,but I'm also thinking about general desirability and future values. You guys know best, thanks.

if you found a axis in pink not red buy it. sure its not a evh.

probably 20% more cos its a rare-ish pink EVH.

i think you should go with a normal trem EBMM axis SS, with the MM90 pickups, if you dont need the floyd that is. You can get brilliant bluesy tones out of them, plus you get the great comfort and feel of an axis!

One other question,how thick are the tops are usually? I can't seem to find the answer through the search.Thanks.

well i had about 20 guitars 2 years ago, about 8 fenders, 7 ibanez, 1 samick, a few others. then i discovered Ernie Ball and sold just about EVERYTHING. you'll find its not uncommon here......

It's true. Many of us have owned other guitar makers products. I've owned solid body guitars from two other major manufacturers. Much like other people on this board, I may find myself selling and trading everything else.

Personally, when it comes to solid body electric guitars, I don't really want to buy anything else but EBMM guitars. I've tried some other brands that have a tradition of being the guitars that are held up as the standards in the industry since the 1950's or even earlier. I don't think that their modern products have been as good as the old ones were reputed to have been. At least, I hope the revered vintage instruments from these companies were better.

Recently, I've seen some poor workmanship from one of them. I got a pretty good $trat in 1989. I've seen a lot of modern $trats that I thought had lousy workmanship and sound. I don't really know much about the guitars from the other "standard," because their main products (Le$ P@ul) aren't really what I prefer. EBMM gives us top-notch quality, fantastic customer service (thank goodness, I haven't needed it), beautiful guitars with fantastic finishes, and they do it at prices that make me feel like I'm getting away with something. These are production guitars and production prices with custom shop quality. I might want a PR$ one day, but we'll see.

The fact is that we here on this forum are the die-hard EBMM fans, probably. I think we are die-hards for good reason, though.

I don't get the EX bit, can you clarify?You guys are getting me thinking, now if only I could get rid of my LP Smartwood Standard,ESP Ronnie Wood,1952 ES-175,EB-2........I'll probably get both!Cheers.

The Axis EX, I think, was for the Japanese market, but there are people here who know a lot more about the Axis and EVH product lines than I. So, I'd wait for them to answer.

There are other threads, I just can't seem to find them right now. Basically, the EX was made with the same parts as a US Axis, but assembled in Japan. Others will be along to correct me if I have this information incorrect.

The Axis EX is an Made In Japan (from US parts) Axis that has the EVH pickup toggle (on the cutaway instead of near the volume control). They generally have a finished neck (as opposed to the raw feeling oil & wax finish on US-built EBMM necks) Apparently they're very nice guitars - I'd like to get one someday myself...

As to how thick the tops are, I believe (and someone please correct me if I'm wrong) they're 5mm thick or so (about 1/5th of an inch)... Much thicker than a laminate, but not an LP-inspired inch-thick slab, either...

And finally, regarding which Axis you should buy, only you can answer that question, but personally, if I never used a trem, I don't think I'd bother with a Floyd Rose - with the locking tuners you can restring an Axis Super Sport in about 5 minutes flat (ten if you're really taking your time and stretching the strings) - Floyds just aren't fast for string changes...

You chose wisely - you cant go wrong with an axis,whatever the variant.

I took my Silo and SUB1 to my gig last w/end,first time in 6 months without the Axis and well I missed it,as good as the other two were.Theres just something about the depth of sound you get with that guitar.

Well, I've got it!Not the colour I had in mind which was trans. blue , but rather trans. greenish blue sort of colour, I'll have to check what official name is given. It has a few nicks and missing the rear plastic covering the vibrato ( where can I get the parts?). The action is a bit too high for me, and I'll have to get used to the weight ( which I like). So far so good!This is not having it played through the amp yet!I'll try to post a pic. later. Thanks for the support.
