Need help with a 12 years old Stingray.

Hi,

I’ve wanted to own a Stingray for a very long but could never afford one. Just yesterday, I met someone who wants to trade his 12 year old Stingray with my brand new Fender Marcus Miller.

I’d like to know what are the differences in that bass, especially the tone of it, compared to the current Stingrays.

He told me not to expect a mint bass.
Is there anything I should look out for when I try his Stingray next week?

The serial number he gave me is 28146. Supposed to be a black with maple fretboard. Could anyone give me the exact birth date of this bass?

267xx........ neck date 14 Sept 1988.

28404........24 Apl 1989

Seems to be late 88 or early 89...maybe the latter.

Hey guys how does 5/89 sound.

Generally the SR of yesterday and the current Model are very similar .

Around this time we used different body woods.
Usually we would use ash for trans colors. Opaque colors such as black/white could be poplar depending on supply and production at the time. We also used alnico magnets back then and some say they had a little different sound. . These changes are minimal and should not affect the overall sound that everyone knows Music Man for.

Hi Eugene

Just look out for any warpage in the neck and playability. I bought my 15 yr 2 band EQ 'Ray for SGD$800, had it checked and had it repaired for about SGD$170.

The repairs included change of bone nut and a partial re-fret as the neck was a little warped.

It looks really crap (wait till you see the pics on the abuse this one took), but the sound kicks ass!! Really punches thru the air when you turn the bass eq up and who needs tone adjustment?

But the guy's on for that brand new marcus miller, I'd say you got a tough choice... i think this is where you should ask your conscience.

Why did you get the Miller in the 1st place anyways?
