I really like JP's Gunsmoke 7 string, and i really like that whole gray-metallic sort of thing.

Now, the problem is, i don't know if i should go for Egyptian Smoke or for Graphite Pearl.
I feel that ES is just a bit too gold-ish, but GP looks a bit too dark...

What should i do?

Go Rad Red!!!! :p ;)

I agree with you regarding those colours.
You could always hope to find a Gunsmoke JP on eBay or something!?

The graph pearl does have some metallic qualities that give it more silverishness than grey. But so does the Egyptian Smoke!

IMO though, if they're not exactly what you want, then I would simply choose another colour all together.

That pic does, but I don't think that's how it looks most of the time.
I think these pics probably better represent the colour. Maybe someone else will confirm as I've never seen this colour in person.

That still looks pretty awesome, but that pic from MM's site really spooks me out about the color... because that is some siriuosly gold looking Bongo, not anywhere near metallic gray...

I too wish Gunsmoke was still available. I decided on Graphite Pearl for my JP6. I had browsed a few pictures of Egyptian Smoke but IMO graphite pearl looks alot better but it's also darker.

I can vouch to say that Graphite Pearl isn't black, but it is dark.

When I was buying my second JP, I had the choice of either ES or GP. I went for Graphite Pearl in the end, but I would not hesitate picking up a ES model in the future - infact I want to.

For a good idea of the colors, see if you can downlod the following videos..

Dream Theater - As I Am (Graphite Pearl)
Dream Theater - Endless Sacrifice (Egyptian Smoke)

They're both from the Live at Budokan DVD.

Found As I Am, that color is way too dark for what i am looking for... havn't been able to find Endless Sacrifice yet (which is the more interesting one at the moment), but the search continious.

Or maybe i'll just pick-up LaB... :D

LaB is a great DVD, I recommend you pick it up! But yes, It seems like ES would probably be your best bet as it is a lighter color which seems to be what you're aiming at!

P.S. if you pick up Budokan, make sure to check out the solo on Hollow Years, a pretty impressive Petrucci moment :)

I believe that As I Am it is a sapphire black while on Endless Sacrifice it is either ES or graphite pearl

Here's my ES; see if this helps:

This last photo was taken with a flash; you can see the slight metallic effect that it takes on in certain lighting.

It does reassure me a tad more, but, since youre the only one on this thread that has actually seen an ES in person, perhaps you could tell me if it has that gold-ish style color tone like the Bongo on the MM site?

Under certain lighting (direct sunlight), ES can take on a slight gold color, but I wouldn't say that the result is as extreme as the photo of the Bongo would suggest. I think the best representation of the color as it normally appears is the first photo in the set of three I posted.

i certainly dont think GP is THAT dark...mine is pretty inbetween silver/grey and black. im glad i chose GP...the gold in ES just kinda threw me off alittle...same problem you have. do you gamble, see how it is in person? sorry i cant help ya more.

All-righty then, i'll stick to my first choice of ES. i actually like the idea of it being a bit gold-ish, but not to much. the GP isn't right for me because my current guitar is a transperent black/green flame maple thingy, and the GP is simply too dark and too close to being black...

Thank you all very much, i'm quite sure i've made up my mind, but it'll probably change a couple more times 'till my JP gets here...
