Need Help!!!!

It's just the impression that I get. "Cause I can't get a decent slap tone outta the bass that's supposed to be reknowned for it" Dunno man..slappin is my most favorite thang to do and I've always been able to get a cool slap tone be it on a PBass Or JBass style instrument. The closest I haveto a MM is my L2K not a problem thre. I do have an El Toro that doesn't lend itself to that style but it aint known for it. H*ll t ain't known for much as it is an obscure G&L model.
Yea I guess no-one can help and I've had the bass too long to return it 'cause I thought it might grow on me.
Itcould just be a matter of taste but I think that it is something inherant in the instrument itself..... played a friends MM5 sounded great only gripe there was the g string is too close to the edge of the fretboard.
Now that dead spot on the g string is buggin me....couldn't be in a worse spot not as noticable with rounds though.
Apologies for the "we" thang and I do appear to be the exception rather than the rule.Aint no skirtin' the issue I am very disappointed in my StingRay.....

Hey PaulMack, send me a nothing but bass (or bass and drums) track of your stingray played slap style. I can post that for you, and we can get a listen and make some real suggestions.

Do you use any out-of-the ordinary slap technique? Granted, I don't really play 4 string much, and I have never played a Stingray 4 (only sterling 4 and stingray 5s), but I got some sick slap tones with the stock strings with the pickup selector toward the bridge. I pretty much had the bass up 80%, and the other controls flat. I was playing through a fender combo amp.

I sold my SR5 years back, and I am waiting on my new SR5 to be built.

Have you played a sterling? Maybe that type of pickup is more your style...

I haven't said much one way or the other because I always hear what slap-monsters the Stingrays are - which is not what I do, I string mine with flats and go for more of a Motown thump. So I got no clue on what really is going on.

But my ignorance shouldn't chase you away - that's all I'm saying.

Zing or die! ...is how I live. I string all my basses up with steel rounds. MTD brand on my MTD, and DR low-riders on everything else. I did try nickle low-riders once, and they were pretty good too. I have never tried the EB strings, but I suppose that will be what is delivered on my SR5 So, I'll give those a shot.

What do you have on your stingray now? How old?

p.s. I've never really liked the slap tone of p-basses and I'm not much of a marcus miller slap sound guy either.

My slap style would be more Victor Wooten/Marcus Miller type of thing. I can't come close to those boys though and I ain't implying that I can. I also play the old school root/ octave stuff which is more groove oriented. I do the double thump stuff mostly to show off. I'll see what I can throw together and send it to ya Sean.
No amount of eq or lack of...even when I employ a 5 band parametric fills the void this bass has in it don't know how to explain it didn't have that problem on my bro's StingRAy 5'er though , in series OR parallel. Just my opinion that I got a lemon Hey S**T happens...

Got a fresh set o' Blue Steels had as aet of DR's on it but this bass is harsh enuff without those on it

I've come here looking for answers and have wrote of my disatisfaction with my bass. I've searched the posts and have found I'm not alone. I have also found that we do not seem to be welcome here and may be ridiculed and/or ignored. I am truly sorry if I have made you feel unwelcome. It was not my intention at all.
At first I misread your post and thought your recording was with the SR and that you were not satisfied with the sound. I found the sound to be really unusual for coming from an SR.
Then I got it, and I simply tried to say that i don't know what you should do to make your SR sound like that.
I'll e-mail this to you also, because I am really sorry if I have misbehaved. Sometimes I try to blame my manners on me not being native english speaking...

Oh, I like Marcus and his playing, just not a super huge fan of his tone. I like more mids in my slap tone.

Can you take it to a GC or other retail store to A/B with other stingrays? If so, maybe you can find out if something is wrong and get a warranty repair on the electronics or something.

Don't sweat it Strummer.....just totally disgusted with the bass at this time wouldn't feel as bad had I bought it used. It was an expensive mistake and I'm stuck with it.Hopefully replacing the PUP and electronics will help.....if not I just wasted a couple hundred more......aint gonna take that dead spot outta the neck though....How do they say it in Jazz? an avoid note

A lot of bandwidth and patience have been spent with your displeasure....sell the bass and move on... maybe we just can't make you happy sonically. We have only made about 50,000 of these and most people are happy. I'm sorry that the bass makes you unhappy but my advice is to not bastardize it...just sell it and play what you prefer.

It has truly crossed the line for me. Enough is enough......

At the end of this thread's life, I will chime in just to say that not every bass I've ever owned has made me leap about and larf and sing. I've had a few that I thought were going to do a certain thing for me and I turned out to be wrong - could have been me, could have been the bass, could have been a combination of things or the way the stars aligned or perhaps Barbra Streisand still had that bovinehost voodoo doll. What I did in those cases was just move on.

I'm completely at a loss as to how a Stingray can't get a decent slap-tone. Every pickup that comes out of SLO falls within a certain very specific tolerance, and nearly everyone who wants to slap their Stingray seems to think it does that pretty well.

I guess I'm saying that I'm with the boss on this one.
