guys, have Gallien Krueger backline 2x10. And i'm thinking changing out the spearkers in it to achieve a 4ohm impedance so that i can use the full power of the amp without an extention cab. thougths? advice?

More Power!

I thought I was either going to read something about "Tim the Tool Man Taylor" or something from Star Trek!!!

Sorry. I can't help you. :)

Here's my 2 cents.

Don't change the speakers. Sell that cab and buy a 4 ohm cab. Once you modify the cabinet you have, it kills any resale value it has. Sell it and use the proceeds for the new cab.

I speak from experience.

I don't know the GK models too well, and reading a generic manual leads me to the conclusion that the 210 has a bigger power amp than the 115, with 180W@8 ohms / 300W@4 ohms. Changing the speakers would give you about 2 dB extra, while adding an extension cab like a 15" would give you about 5 db extra (if the cab has similar sensitivity). Adding a 410 might be even better (or a 2x15 if you feel crazy) and getting a box like that might not be too expensive. Still, you will only have 300W, which isn't a whole lot of power. Anyway, what I wanted to say is that lack of power can be offset by large speaker cone area.

Good point!

Adding an 8 ohm extn. cab should create a 4 ohm load if it's in series.

But you are right about another thing too. He will still only have 300W.

I played for a long time with a Hartke 3500. It's only 350W at 4 ohms. I was driving a 210XL and a 115XL in series and it did a pretty good job.

thanks guys, you've swayed me. that was my original plan, to get the one 15. I was momentarilty swayed by this other guys story. But i think i'll stick to my guns! hahaha

PS- MM Bongo through GK amp equals shear joy personified. Some night when its too late to blast in my apt i just sit on the floor with my head right by the cone at a wisper volume. This bass has ungodly tone!
