Need some amp advice for a Luke

I have never liked the sound of those Rectum-fryers. I don't know why, but the sound is just harsh to my ears. I suspect I'm in the minority though... and I must say that they sound good when the likes of Petrucci play them. But they aren't for me.

Yeah l found them harsh as well, but Randalls take on them is great.

Finally bought an amp

So, turning down the volume knob on the guitar did the trick, and I picked up a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. For $539, it seems like a great first amp for me, and there's a lot of information on mods both simple and complex to achieve just about any sound you want.

That Randall does sound really cool though. When I'm ready to spend more on an amp, I'll definitely look into that further.

Yeah l know you have to tweak those amps, l have, the guys in the store have, they/I just can't get a sound l like out of them, i like the distorted sound on the recifiers, but was unhappy with the clean, that''s why l am after the Randall, a recifier distorted and fender clean in one amp, what's not to love about the amp. It gets annoying at times when people abuse you for not liking Mesa Boogie amps, as you said, they are not for everyone, like Ernie Ball guitars, they are not for everyone, but l love em, and don't abuse people who don't.

The stiletto was nice, but the price for a stiletto head and 2x12 was $6200 (aus dollars), where the Randall 100 watt combo was just over $3000, the shop couldn't give an exact price, cause they haven't been released here. BUt the guys in the shop were nice about everything, they said if l like l could have a randall 100 watt head, and 2x12 for the price of the combo, but l still have to find the time to go down to the store again, and have a chat to them about prices.

I don't know about you, but half price for an amp l like better.

A lot depends on the Mesa you pick as well. They are all different. I haven't tried the Randall, but they do make some really nice equipment. I used to love the old JC amps. Here, if you look around you can generally find a good used MK IV for somewhere around a grand. It does a very good fenderish clean and a crunch that can be similar to a recto. All of the MB amps though have their own personalities.

Nice to hear. The HR deluxe is a very nice first amp, you can get quite a few good sounds out of it. And remember, when you want a little omph or a bit of crunch on a solo just turn up the volume knob a bit. You never even have to touch your amp.
